LG Reveals LED/LCD HDTV Without Borders... Sort Of

By Chris Chiarella

LG does their share of market research before developing and releasing a new product, in line with their "Life's Good" and "Something Better" initiatives. Something consumers have been asking for is apparently a bezel-free, "borderless" TV. And while the dream of a display that shows us 100% picture all the way to the edges is still just beyond technology's grasp, LG has taken a bold step in that direction with their newest LCD (SL80 Series) and LED/LCD (SL90 Series) HDTVs, shown for the first time anywhere this week at their Summer Line Show in New York City.

The primary design characteristic of both the SL80 and SL90 are the single edge-to-edge panel of glass combined with a slim frame underneath, resulting in a distinctive look unlike traditional flat panel televisions.  To further the minimalist aesthetic, they incorporate LG's Mark Levinson-tuned Invisible Speaker for an even sleeker appearance. Both also offer Intelligent Sensor, automatically adjusting the image to the room's lighting conditions, for a more enjoyable viewing experience.

The SL80 Series relies upon cold cathode fluorescent lamps for its backlighting, but offers a 240Hz refresh rate.

The SL80 Series uses slim CCFL backlighting, with TruMotion 240Hz for superior motion detail, in a form factor only 1.8 inches deep at its slimmest point. Available in August, it can be had in 42-inch ($1,599.95), 47-inch ($1,899.95) and 55-inch ($2,799.95) screen-sizes. The SL90 Series uses next-generation LED backlighting, which looks outstanding and consumes less energy, while boasting an astounding 3,000,000:1 Mega Contrast Ratio (which is effectively unmeasurable). The 42- and 47-inch SL90's will hit later this year, with pricing to be announced.

The 47-inch 47SL90 meanwhile takes advantage of the latest in LED backlighting technology, for superior contrast.

As you would expect, Borders stores will not be carrying the SL80 and SL90 Series.
