LG's 55LW9800 - First Passive 3D TV with THX Certification

By Rachel Cericola

LG can stake claim to an impressive first. The company just announced the 55-inch 55LW9800 Cinema 1080p 3D LED, the world's first passive 3D TV to score both THX 2D and 3D Display Certification.

Known as a "NANO FULL LED" model, the 55LW9800 has a thin film that incorporates a full array of LEDs. This promises a better distribution of light and detailed local dimming from over two hundred addressable sectors. The end result boasts better colors.

It's also a 3D TV -- one that uses LG's film-pattern retarder (FPR) 3D screen technology to make those 3D images happen. As mentioned, this is the first passive 3D TV to score THX certification. That means it has passed over 400 THX tests evaluating left and right eye images for color accuracy, crosstalk, viewing angles and video processing performance.

As an added bonus, the 55LW9800 features LG's Smart TV platform. This offers instant access to services such as Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, and MOG, as well as video conferencing via Skype (using an add-on camera). If that's not enough, you can find additional content in the LG App Store, which includes a new 3D Zone. All of this added entertainment should be easy to surf through, via the TV's built-in Wi-Fi and the included gesture-based Magic Motion Remote Control.

Other features include 2D to 3D Conversion, LG's TruMotion 480Hz refresh rate, a narrow bezel and thin depth of just 1.08 inches.

"The milestone of being the first passive 3D HDTV to pass our rigorous testing and achieve 3D Display Certification is quite impressive," said Kevin Wines, THX's director of Image Technology. "LG has created a product that meets the utmost standards for 2D and 3D picture quality, delivering movie experiences with the same stunning color and detail found in the filmmaker's studio."

The 55LW9800 is shipping now, with an MSRP of $3799.99.
