LG Unveils New Lower Cost 4K Ultra HD TV Models Starting at $3499

By Rachel Cericola

So far, we've seen a lot of Ultra HD 4K TVs in giant screen sizes -- with giant price tags. Earlier this year, LG Electronics released a pair of smaller 4K models, under the LA9700 Series. Now, the company is making 4K a little more affordable, announcing a new pair of 55- and 65-inch 4K TVs at the CEDIA Expo in Denver, Colorado.

The newly announced LA9650 Series will bring the total number of LG 4K TVs to five. Available in 65- and 55-inch screen sizes, each of the new models hasĀ  that drool-worthy 3830-by-2160 image, which is four times the resolution of a full 1080p HDTV. However, the hook here is that this duo has a starting price of just $3499.

Both sets include an edge-lit LED screen, as well as an IPS panel display and the Tru-ULTRA HD Engine. Both also have LED Plus technology, which boasts greater brightness control through edge LED local dimming.

Also worth noting is that both sets have a brand-new H.265 high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) decoder, which is designed to make these models forward-compatible, if content providers begin to utilize this new standard for encoding broadcast or streaming content.

LG is packing these new 4K TVs with Cinema 3D features and LG's Smart TV platform. The latter delivers on-screen access to streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, LG's own 3D World, and much more. Also, the LG Smart Share feature allows users to access content from smartphones, tablets, laptops and other devices via DLNA, WiDi, Miracast, MHL and 2nd Display options.

LG is shipping the LA9650 Series with a new four-mode Magic Remote. This includes an air mouse with point-and-click features, as well as gesture commands, a scroll wheel and voice recognition.

"This time last year, we became the first manufacturer to launch an Ultra HD TV in the U.S. with our revolutionary 84-inch class model," said Jay Vandenbree, senior vice president of LG's home entertainment division. "Today, we're solidifying our leadership role in Ultra HD TV by rounding out our lineup that displays 8 million pixels and incorporates technologies that allow consumers to enjoy Ultra HD picture even without 4K content."

LG Electronics will start shipping the 65- and 55-inch LA9650 Ultra HD TVs this month, priced at $4,999 and $3,499, respectively. The new sets will join LG's 65- and 55-inch LA9700 models, as well as the 84-inch LM9600.
