Google Chromecast Gets Broadcast TV and DVR Capabilities via PlayOn/PlayLater

By Rachel Cericola

If you've been clutching onto your $35, wondering whether or not to purchase a Google Chromecast -- well, you can now safely unclench that fist.

MediaMall Technologies just announced that its PlayOn and PlayLater platforms now support the Chromecast dongle. This will instantly make more than 100 channels available to Chromecast users, which includes all sorts of free content from CBS, NBC, ABC, Comedy Central and Hulu (without the Hulu Plus subscription).

Another interesting addition is that PlayLater perk. This actually adds DVR capability to the Chromecast, so users can record videos for casting later, even after they're no longer available online. The PlayOn Browser feature will even cast that video from any web browser on a PC right to the TV, without any distracting browser frames crowding up the screen.

If the channels and DVR goodness isn't enough, know that MediaMall has mobile apps that will allow users to surf through channels, which means that Chromecast users can have an easier interface.

PlayOn will allow Chromecast users access to more than 100 channels, with content from CBS, NBC, ABC, Comedy Central and Hulu.

"Chromecast is a great, inexpensive device for cord cutters, but is somewhat limited in its content and casting capabilities," said Jeff Lawrence, CEO of MediaMall Technologies. "PlayOn gives Chromecast users a universal interface for TV-watching and vastly expands the list of available channels, and with very little fuss, it also brings a full-screen cross-browser web casting experience that users can't get with the Chromecast alone."

To use PlayOn with Chromecast, you'll need to download PlayOn to a PC, as well as download the mobile app. That portable device is key, since it acts as your channel guide and remote control.

Of course, you're also going to need to sign up for a PlayOn account. That's available for $29.99 per year or you can opt for a lifetime subscription, which seems like a bargain at $59.99. Both options can also be bundled with PlayLater recording software for an extra $10.

The PlayOn Browser is also compatible with Roku devices, the Xbox 360, and the Xbox One.
