DISH Network Launches New Satellite to Improve HD Offering

By Rachel Cericola

Did you happen to see a little UFO up above over the weekend? It wasn't E.T. or even Alf. However, there's a slight possibility that it was DISH Network's new satellite, EchoStar XV.

On Saturday, the satellite provider says they successfully launched another new bird in the sky, named EchoStar XV. EchoStar used to be the service's parent company, before they split into two entities in 2008. To date, all of the satellites bear the EchoStar name.

Launched on an International Launch Services Proton/Breeze M vehicle from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the new satellite will soon reside at 61.5 degrees West Longitude at an altitude of approximately 22,000 miles. If you're interested in watching the actual launch, DISH has posted a nifty little 2-minute video of the event on YouTube.

The EchoStar XV is the company's second successful satellite launch this year. The EchoStar XIV was launched back in March. Dish says that once the EchoStar XV is fully operational, they will use it to boost the number of national HD channels being offered to subscribers.

"The launch of EchoStar XV demonstrates DISH Network's continuing commitment to delivering the most high-quality HD programming at the best value," said Tom Cullen, DISH Network's Executive Vice President. "DISH Network is the only pay-TV provider that offers ‘HD Free For Life' to every customer, and we're proud that EchoStar XV will soon allow us to provide even more high definition channels for free."

Dish Network currently offers more than 200 national HD channels and local HD channels in 156 markets.
