Definitive Technology DI 5.5 LCR In-Wall Speakers Arriving/Disappearing Soon

By Chris Chiarella

One of two new models added to Definitive Technology's line of "Disappearing In-Wall" home theater loudspeakers, the rectangular DI 5.5LCR stereo/front stage speakers offer the big, clean sound of freestanding speakers in an easy-to-install built-in model. Combining a small exposed surface area, hidden flange and low-profile micro-perforation grille, the DI 5.5 LCR is visually unobtrusive when in place. The DI 5.5 LCR can be teamed with matching DI 5.5BPS bipolar surround speakers for a low-profile, high-performance home theater system.

Inside the DI 5.5 LCR is some of Definitive's most advanced technology, such as their exclusive Balanced Dual Surround System ("BDSS") bass/midrange drivers, two per speaker. These achieve superior bass output and dynamic range when compared to similar flush-mount speakers with larger drivers. (The DI 5.5LCR's 5-1/4-inch drivers offer the bass/dynamics of a traditional 6-1/2-inch speaker.) Also featured are pure aluminum dome tweeters and an adjustable crossover network for broad, even dispersion.

The Definitive DI 5.5 LCR ("left/center/right") in-wall speaker puts high-quality sound into a low-visibility package.

The DI 5.5LCR fits in standard wall stud spacing when used in horizontal (center-channel) orientation, thanks to its 14.4-inch-by-6.6-inch cutout dimension All models in the Definitive DI Series are acoustically matched so they can be combined however suits the needs of the home theater, and the owner's budget. The DI 5.5LCR was on display at CEDIA EXPO 2009 in Atlanta, rocking the house while blending in to the woodwork.  It is expected to ship to dealers in January 2010 at a suggested retail price of $399 each.
