DTS Announces First Gear to Get DTS:X Immersive Sound for Home

By Rachel Cericola

Ever since DTS, Inc. first introduced DTS:X back in the spring of 2015, we've been waiting and wondering when we would start seeing home theater components that could handle the new audio format. Apparently, they've been working hard on making that happen, because the company has just announced a slew of different DTS:X-capable options for the home and pretty much everywhere else.

Very similar to Dolby Atmos, DTS:X can deliver an immersive audio experience. That's because instead of assigning sound to specific channels in your home theater system, the DTS:X audio format allows content creators to place the sound with actual objects. The end result delivers sound from almost every angle, including above.

Both Denon and Marantz previously announced plans to upgrade some of their existing products to add in support for the format. DTS:X firmware for Denon's AVR-X7200W(A) will be released on January 28, 2016, with updates for the AVR-X6200W and the AVR-X4200W to follow on February 18. Marantz will start the upgrade process on February 4, with firmware for the AV8802A preamplifier. Updates for SR7010 and SR6010 receivers and the AV7702mkII preamplifier will start on March 3.

Although it won't be as noticable to some, DTS is also working with a few companies to add support to chipsets. DTS:X technology has been certified on Texas Instruments' DA8xx performance audio platforms for AV receivers. It's also available as a 2-DSP solution to run in TI's 32bit+16bit memory architecture or 32bit+32bit memory AVR architectures. Analog Devices has also completed DTS certification so that the company's SHARC 214xx family of processors can now enable DTS:X immersive processing technology for AVRs.

"Over the past couple of years, DTS has introduced innovative, next-generation audio solutions to the market from Play-Fi to Headphone:X to DTS:X technologies, along with the recent addition of HD Radio technology to our portfolio," said Jon Kirchner, chairman and CEO of DTS, Inc. "In 2016, DTS will continue to expand its reach for listeners to experience enhanced entertainment no matter where they are. We are proud to highlight the products and services incorporating our solutions for the home, mobile devices and autos as we continue to work hard to fulfill our promise to deliver the highest-quality audio to as many people possible."

Even though four major movie studios have committed to the format, there are currently just three Blu-ray titles available with a DTS:X soundtrack. That lineup includes Ex Machina, American Ultra, and The Last Witch Hunter. Additional DTS:X-capable titles will be announced in the coming weeks and beyond.
