Vinyl Lives! Audio-Technica Puts a Spin on the LP240 USB Turntable

By Rachel Cericola

It's time to dust off the old vinyl -- even the bad stuff. Audio-Technica just announced its AT-LP240-USB Direct-Drive Turntable System.

Perfect for home or DJ use, this space-age-looking device takes your old record albums and can either play them back directly in all their analog goodness, or convert them to modern digital tracks via its USB interface. It can play 33-1/3, 45 and 78 RPM records. The turntable's USB output then connects directly to any computer to transfer music that you can then load onto an iPod, iPhone, iPod, or other portable audio device.

A hydraulic tone arm lift and removable stylus target makes it easy to cue up tracks, while an adjustable arm height and vertical tracking angle (VTA) promise accurate playback. Packing a direct-drive high-torque multi-pole DC motor, this device boasts unwavering speed stability. Other features include a special S-shaped tone arm with adjustable tracking force and anti-skate adjustment, a removable universal cartridge mount, a damped cast-aluminum platter with stroboscopic speed indicator and a felt slip mat.

The AT-LP240-USB comes with PC- and Mac-compatible software, a USB cable, audio adapter cables, removable dust cover, 45 RPM adapter and accessories. The AT-LP240-USB has an MSRP of $499, but it's available online or in store at J&R Music World for $100 less.
