Atlantic Technology Ships AT-2 Bookshelf Speakers with H-PAS

By Rachel Cericola

Looking to cap the year off with a brand new pair of speakers? Atlantic Technology thinks that you've been very good this year, so the company just announced plans to start shipping the new AT-2 bookshelf loudspeaker.

Like the company's AT-1 floor-standing speaker, the AT-2 packs in the perk of H-PAS (Hybrid Pressure Accelleration System) technology. This is Atlantic's own audio innovation, developed in partnership with Peter Clements of the loudspeaker company Solus/Clements.  H-PAS delivers unprecedented deep bass with low distortion -- particularly for speakers this size. The AT-2 measures just 16 inches tall and has an interior acoustic volume of less than 2/3-cubic foot. However, it still boasts smooth bass, which Atlantic Technology claims goes all the way down to 41 Hz (at -3dB).

The AT-2 also features the same 1.125-inch Low Resonance Tweeter that the AT-1 has, but adds in a single 5.25-inch long-excursion woofer. Atlantic has rated the crossover frequency at 2,200 Hz, which promises a wide midrange dispersion, all while keeping the tweeter out of thermal and mechanical danger.

"H-PAS is a new speaker technology that is defined by a rather complex mathematical formula," says Peter Tribeman, Atlantic Technology's president. "Since the early days of loudspeakers, audio engineers have used the mathematics of sound to design speakers with a vast array of different cabinet types. While H-PAS may seem to resemble other kinds of enclosures, it is quite different. The H-PAS formula that was devised by our engineers is unlike anything we've encountered before to define such known types as acoustic suspension, reflex, transmission line, and so on."

Our editor Chris Boylan has been following the development since the very first public demo of H-PAS at CEDIA 2009.  In his words, the bass out of the fairly small demo units was "prodigious."

Designed for small-to-medium-sized rooms, this speaker features a multi-layer black finish, with "sparkles" in the middle, under two or three layers of clear-coat finish. It also has a standard 0.25-inch threaded insert for mounting onto speaker stands.

Atlantic Technology is selling the AT-2 loudspeakers now for $1800 per pair.
