Amazon Picks Top 10 Movies and TV Shows for 2011

By Rachel Cericola

If we had to count how many Blu-rays were released this year, well... we'd be doing a lot of counting. Hundreds? Thousands? Yeah, there were a lot of them. Some people need to have every release. Those are people with really large AV cabinets and/or bookshelves.

Some of us just don't have the space needed to house every Blu-ray release, even for one year. Of course, you don't need to buy all of them, but there are a few titles that you certainly shouldn't miss. Amazon is helping to narrow down the selection, announcing its Best Movies & TV of 2011.

"We work very hard to provide our customers with the most extensive selection of video content. We offer more than 400,000 DVDs and Blu-rays as well as more than 100,000 digital videos for instant streaming with Amazon Instant Video," said Katie Lay, senior manager for the Amazon Instant Video store. "We created the Best of the Year store to help customers navigate all that great video content and to help them discover movies and TV shows to watch instantly on their new Kindle Fire, with Amazon Instant Video, or via DVD and Blu-ray."

Some of the chosen titles are available on Blu-ray, as well as DVD and via Amazon Instant Video and Prime Instant Video. If you to explore the formats, as well as Amazon's top 100, check out the complete list of Amazon's Best Movies & TV of 2011.

At the top of the crop for movies is the critically acclaimed David Fincher flick, The Social Network. Did you ever think that a movie about Facebook would be at the top of any lists? The film stars Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, with Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer, and Rooney Mara in supporting roles.

The rest of the top 10 includes a ton of Oscar winners, action flicks, and even a sci-fi classic. Right under the top spot is the newly released Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, followed by Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Episodes I-VI), The King's Speech, X-Men: First Class, Bridesmaids, Inside Job, Black Swan, Midnight in Paris, and Disney's Tangled.

This was also a great year for TV releases. Amazon picked The Walking Dead: Season 1 as the top TV show of the year. Also critically acclaimed, this AMC drama is based on the freaky comic book series of the same name and has backing by director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption). If you couldn't tell by the title, it follows a small group of survivors amidst the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse.

Taking the second-place spot is FX's Louie: Season 1, followed by another AMC favorite, Breaking Bad: Season 4. Next up is NBC's Parks and Recreation: Season 3, followed by the PBS show Downton Abbey, AMC's Mad Men: Season 4, FX's Sons of Anarchy: Season 4, and NBC's Community: Season 2. In ninth place is HBO's Bored to Death: Season 2, with the BBC's Friday Night Dinner: Season 1 rounding out the list.

Of course, Amazon has plenty of other movie and TV titles available, from both the past and present. Check out the retailer's full lineup for information:
