XBOX One and One S Get DTS:X and Dolby Atmos Bitstream Passthrough

By Rachel Cericola

If you want to be truly immersed in that gaming experience, better pick up anĀ Xbox One or the Xbox One S. Microsoft just announced plans to add a few updates to the gaming console, including bitstream passthrough support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X

This new feature will add that perk to the Xbox One's Blu-ray player, so your connected receiver can decode audio formats natively. According to Microsoft, all bitstream formats will be supported, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Both of these formats can put sound to various objects on-screen. The end result is a listening experience like no other, because you can actually hear audio from every direction -- including overhead.

The software update will be available for the Xbox One and the Xbox One S. Despite being more compact than its predecessor, the newer Xbox One S comes packing a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, as well as support for 4K streaming and High Dynamic Range (HDR) content. It's also available with up to 2TB of storage.

In addition to the audio perks, Microsoft is adding all sorts of other interesting features to the console. This includes Beam Streaming, which allows gamers to stream gameplay live to the Xbox community. Of course, you can also be a spectator, peeking in on other games and interacting with the players. This feature is live for Xbox users now, but PC gamers will have to wait until April 11.

Microsoft is also giving Xbox users a more intuitive Guide, a simplified Home experience, and much more. Those updates are also live now. However, you'll have to wait a few days for those audio goodies, since they're expected to hit later this week.
