Top Selling 4K Home Theater Projectors Revealed in Latest Report from PMA Research

By Chris Boylan

Curious about the top-selling 4K projectors for home use? Research firm PMA Research has been tracking projector sales for over 25 years and just recently published projector sales statistics for August 2022. The top 5 selling 4K home theater projectors for August included models from ViewSonic, LG and Optoma. The stats are compiled from PMA's monthly Retail Projector Tracking Service panel, which is made up of U.S. retailers, web resellers, and custom installers.

All five of the top sellers were single chip DLP models with 4K resolution, four have traditional lamps and one (The LG HU810P) includes a dual laser lighting source.

These were the top-selling 4K Home Theater projectors for August, 2022.

  1. ViewSonic PX701-4K (MSRP: $899) - Amazon
  2. LG HU810P (MSRP: $2,999) - ProjectorScreen.com
  3. Optoma UHD38 (MSRP: $1,449) - ProjectorScreen.com
  4. Optoma UHD35 (MSRP $1,499) - Amazon
  5. Optoma UHD55 (MSRP: $1,799) - ProjectorScreen.com

The most popular seller in the category - the ViewSonic PX701-4K - is a budget-priced 4K projector, selling for under $900. With native UltraHD resolution (3840x2160 pixels), the PX701 offers a taste of 4K at a bargain price. ViewSonic states a brightness of 3200 ANSI Lumens and a low input lag time of 4.2 microseconds making it a great choice for gamers. HDR formats of HLG and HDR10 are supported for High Dynamic Range. It is a single chip DLP-based projector which uses a traditional lamp and color wheel, but ViewSonic claims that the lamp will last "up to 20,000 hours" in the unit's "Super Eco+" mode. Seems high but it would take 10 years to test that, so I guess we'll just have to trust them. For the price, with 4K resolution, it's hard to beat.

The ViewSonic projector does not include any built in apps or streaming options, but these can be added via a separate ViewSonic dongle. You can also hook up a standard streaming box like a Fire Stick, Roku Stick or Apple TV 4K to one of the available HDMI inputs.

LG's HU810P ($2,999) is a higher performance true home theater projector.  It uses a laser-based light source (dual red and blue lasers) for extended life, high color accuracy (97% of DCI-P3 color gamut) and high brightness. The 810P includes a brightness optimizer for high performance in both bright and dark rooms, and Filmmaker mode so you know you are seeing movies and shows the way the directors intended. For maximum installation flexibility, the HU810P offers vertical and horizontal lens shift (H ±24%, V ±60%) and a 1.6X zoom lens.

The HU810P comes with LG's WebOS 5.0 on board for access to the top streaming apps like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and more. It also supports Apple AirPlay for seamless integration with other Apple devices.

Coming in at #3, the Optoma UHD38 (MSRP: $1,449) is a single-chip DLP projector with 4K resolution and a brightness rating of 4,000 Lumens. The UHD38 delivers a low input lag (4.2ms) and a high refresh rate of 240Hz making it a good choice for gamers. The unit supports 1080p gaming at 120Hz or 4K UHD gaming at 60Hz with the latest consoles for blur-free visuals and smooth motion.

Fourth on the list of top sellers is the Optoma UHD35 (MSRP: $1,499). Like the UHD38, the UHD35 has an input lag of 4.2 microseconds and supports 1080p gaming at 120Hz or 4K UHD gaming at 60Hz. It is a single chip DLP projector with a traditional lamp, which Optoma claims can last "up to 15,000 hours." Its rated brightness is 3,600 Lumens and it supports HLG and HDR10 high dynamic range content. The projector features a 1.1x zoom lens and variable keystone controls (±40°). There are no streaming apps on board but you can connect a streaming stick to one of the projector's HDMI 2.0 inputs.

Coming in at the #5 spot for top sellers in August is the Optoma UHD55 ($1,799). The UHD55 offers 3,600 ANSI Lumens of brightness from a single DLP chip and a traditional projection lamp. Unlike most budget 4K projectors, the UHD55 offers a physical vertical lens shift control. This can allow you to adjust for non-optimum placement of the projector - like close to the floor or right up on the ceiling - without having to resort to detail-robbing keystone correction.
