MartinLogan Unveils New Motion Series Bookshelf and Tower Speakers

By Geoff Morrison

MartinLogan's Motion Series of loudspeakers has been extremely well reviewed, so it was only logical for the American speaker manufacturer to expand the range. After all, not everyone can fit a small sub/sat system into their home theaters.  Some of us have to squeeze in bookshelf or even tower speakers.

The LX16 bookshelf speaker has the Motion Series' Folded Motion tweeter and a 5.25" woofer. The LX26 tower doubles up on the 5.25" woofer. The cabinets are both made from 0.75" MDF with a solid, brushed aluminum baffle.  As with other speakers in the Motion series, these new models are voiced to complement not only other Motion series speakers, but also MartinLogan's more expensive electrostatic speakers, so you can mix and match models from both lines when piecing together your own custom multi-channel surround sound system.

Pricing on the LX16 is $799.95 per pair, but the pricing on the LX26 has yet to be announced. Both models are scheduled to ship this summer.

MartinLogan has a dedicated page for the LX series.

The ElectroMotion series has also been increased, with the EM-C2 center channel and FX2 surround speakers. The $799.95 EM-C2 has two 5.25" woofers and the series staple Folded Motion XT tweeter.

The EM-FX2 ($649.95 each) has two Folded Motion XT tweeters and a single 6.5" woofer. It's available in black or white, and can be mounted in a corner, on a wall, or with an angled wall mount for high placement. Both the C2 and FX2 are expected to begin shipping in March.

During CES 2011 at their room in the Venetian, MartinLogan was demoing the new Ethos and Theos electrostats. I had a chance to hear these in the booth and at MartinLogan during a visit this past summer. The Ethos has a 44" by 9.2" CLS electrostatic transducer and an 8-inch woofer powered by a 200 watt amp. The Theos forgoes the amp and has a slightly different woofer and cabinet (though driver size stays the same). Both sounds fantastic and huge in that special electrostatic way.

Pricing for the Theos is $5,000 per pair. The Ethos is $6,495 per pair.

Some, but not all, of MartinLogan's goodies are available online, and some even actually go on sale from time to time.  Here are a couple of authorized online MartinLogan dealers:
