LG's 2023 OLED TVs Promise 70% Brightness Boost

By Chris Boylan

Until recently, LG had a nice uncontested run as makers of the best performing TVs on the market. Their OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TVs offered the best black levels and the best color saturation of any flat panel TV. A few years ago, Sony joined the OLED TV fray by purchasing OLED panels from LG Display and adding their own video processing and cabinet styling.

But last year, LG's South Korean nemesis, Samsung Electronics, re-entered the OLED TV market with a vengeance. The company's QD-OLED TVs combine the black level and contrast benefits of self-emissive OLED panels with the color accuracy, brightness and color saturation benefits of Quantum Dots. And Sony made things even more interesting by offering both types of OLED TVs last year, with traditional OLED panels provided by LG Display and QD-OLED panels provided by Samsung.

This made things a lot more interesting at the 2022 TV shootout where Sony, Samsung and LG swept the top three rankings with three different OLED TVs.

Not to be outdone, LG has come to this year's CES (Consumer Electronics Show) ready to rumble with new and improved OLED TVs that the company says will offer "up to 70% brighter images than previous OLED TVs."

All of LG's 2023 OLED TVs feature a new, improved WebOS Smart TV interface designed to make your favorite content easier to find.

They call this technology LG OLED evo G3 Brightness Booster Max, and it combines both hardware and software improvements to achieve these significant gains in brightness. The company also states that they have attained these brightness gains with no loss in color fidelity. In fact, the sets are rated for "100% Color Volume" (DCI-P3) and "100% Color Fidelity" (measured to CIE DE 2000 with 125 color points).

The company is also confident that this boost in brightness will not lead to premature panel failure as they are offering a full 5-year warranty on both the G3 (4K) and Z3 (8K) series OLED TVs.

LG's G3 series OLED TVs feature a zero gap design that allows you to mount the display right up against the wall like a picture frame.

The C3 and G3 series 4K OLED TVs will all include the latest version of the company's flagship processor, the 6th generation Alpha 9 AI Processor, 4K version. The Z3 series includes an 8K version of this same processor. Only the G3 and Z3 Series TVs get the full "Brightness Booster Max." The C3 series will get a boost as well, but it's a lesser version called simply "Brightness Booster." The B Series OLED line-up features the company's Alpha 7 AI processor. All of LG's 2023 OLED TVs include HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range support, 120 Hz refresh rate and under 0.1 ms panel response times.
