LG Throws a Curve Ball with New Bendable OLED Flex TV/Gaming Monitor

By Chris Boylan

Curved TVs were the next big thing... until they weren't. Though every major TV brand offered curved TVs a few years back, now they're much harder to find. But those who enjoy the feeling of being immersed inside a different world (like gamers) actually like curved screens. Wouldn't it be cool if you could get a display that was flat but could be curved at the touch of a button? Well now you can, thanks to LG's bendable OLED Flex Display.

On display today at CEDIA EXPO in Dallas, the LG OLED Flex (Model 42LX3QPUA), or "LX3" for short, is a 42-inch 4K OLED Display with a custom curve. At a touch of a button on the remote control, the OLED Flex can transform from perfectly flat screen to a highly curved screen with 900R rating or anywhere in between. Most curved monitors available today only get as curved as about 1800R. This means they would form a perfect circle if lined up and viewed from 1800 millimeters (1.8 meters) away. The OLED Flex gets much more curvy than that with its 900R rating (circular from 0.9 meters). This means you can feel even more enveloped by the screen when you're viewing it up close. But if you prefer a less extreme curve you can adjust that on the remote. There are 20 levels of curvature available (5% increments).

Get into your gaming with LG's OLED Flex LX3 display.

This bendable magic is made possible by LG's incredibly thin backlight-free OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panel technology. And, because it's an OLED, with self-illuminating pixels, the Flex can reproduce true black, highly accurate colors and excellent contrast. Gaming fans will be hapy to hear that the input lag is a barely measurable 0.1 millisecond. Touch the gaming controller and you'll see an immediate response on screen. No lines. No waiting.

As a monitor, the LX3 does not come with any on-board streaming apps, but you can hook up a streaming stick or cast video from your phone if you want to watch streaming videos while you're working or gaming (or both). The Flex includes a Multi-View option which allows you to view content from two different sources simultaneously and select which audio you want to hear. This means you can play a PC or console game while watching YouTube videos at the same time, right on the main display.

LG's OLED Flex LX3 has a customizable curve. It's adjustable from flat to 900R curvature in 5% increments.

The Flex also allows you to adjust the size of the screen image according to your individual preferences or the genre of game you're playing. Fans of role playing games (RPGs), racing games or platformers may want to use all 42 inches of the screen, while real time strategy (RTS) or first-person shooter (FPS) gamers might prefer a 32- or 27-inch image that allows you to see everything going on in the game environment at a glance.

The display is powered by LG's Alpha 9 Gen 5 intelligent processor. This, along with the OLED screen enables greater eye comfort with flicker-free, glare-free viewing, thereby lessening eye fatigue. The Flex supports support Dolby Vision gaming at 4K/120Hz and the latest HDMI 2.1 features, such as variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low latency mode (ALLM). The monitor is also G-SYNC Compatible and AMD FreeSync Premium certified, ensuring tear- and stutter-free visuals that help bring games fully to life.

Revamped for LG OLED Flex, LG's Gaming Optimizer adds customized sound settings for specific game genres to its range of gamer-centric picture and audio options. Its dedicated game sound settings menu includes an equalizer, switches for AI Game Sound and Dolby Atmos, and offers access to advanced audio settings, enabling users to tailor the gaming experience precisely how they want it. The LX3 includes two front-firing 40W speakers that help further elevate the gaming and content-viewing experience.

The LG OLED Flex will be available next month (October, 2022) at LG.com and select LG-authorized retailers with a suggested retail price of $2,999.
