Get a 98-inch QLED TV for $4,000. That's It. That's the Headline

By Chris Boylan

Every year, you can count on three things: TVs get better. TVs get bigger. TVs get cheaper. But once in a while a TV deal comes along that seems too good to be true. But this one actually isn't. It's real.

UPDATE: The $4,000 sale price expired as Amazon sold out their existing inventory within a couple of days. The TV is back in stock at a revised sale price of $4999.99 as of May 31, 2023.

TCL's 98-inch 98R754 4K QLED TV just went on sale on Amazon for $4,001.23 (Update: $4999.99 as of May 31). When it was released last summer it was $8,499. Last week, it was $5,999. Amazon just knocked $2,000 off the already lowered price and now has the cheapest TV over 85 inches we've ever seen. Pay with an Amazon store card and you'll get an additional $200 back as a statement credit after purchase.

More than 8 feet from corner to corner, the TCL 98R754 earns its spot in TCL's "XL" line.

While this may be the cheapest price we're ever seen a TV of this size, the TCL 98R754 is anything but "cheap." It features full Ultra HD 4K native resolution (3840x2160 pixels), Quantum Dot color, LED backlighting with precision local dimming (192 zones) and support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ high dynamic range.

I got to check it out in person at an event last week and it created an impressive (not to mention huge) image with bright vivid colors and excellent black levels. It's no OLED but it's also currently about 20% of the cost of a comparably sized OLED TV. In fact there are some 65-inch OLED TVs that cost more than this 98-inch behemoth. And if you're looking for a truly cinematic experience at home, size definitely matters.

For streaming apps, this TV has plenty, thanks to its integrated Google TV interface. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, AppleTV+. You want it - this TV has got it. Among the four HDMI ports is one that supports eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) for uncompressed audio passthrough to a receiver or external soundbar.

With Google and a microphone on board, the TV also supports voice searches and voice control of Google Home devices such as lights, thermostats and more. "Hey, Google, get me a beer!" Oh wait, that one might not be available... yet.

Gamers will appreciate the set's support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). This enables smooth, lag-free and uninterrupted viewing while gaming.

We met with TCL executives last week and they mentioned that they had sold over 50,000 98-inch TVs last year, in China alone. With pricing like this, they may be selling even more this year in the United States.

Not sure how long this price (and inventory) will last, but if you've been waiting for a crazy deal on a huge high-quality flat panel TV, your wait is officially over.
