3D was definitely the name of the game at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, but even if the notion of wearing shutter glasses around the house and having things thrust in your face doesn't get your motor running, Panasonic's upcoming THX Certified, 50-inch TC-P50VT25 -- destined to be the most popular of the company's new Full HD 3D plasma TV announced at the show -- is still worth getting excited about.
New phosphor technologies that allow the display to switch faster for smoother 3D performance also result in increased performance on 2D materials, specifically better motion handling and a higher contrast ratio (Panasonic promises 5,000,000:1 dynamic contrast) which means deeper black levels. The TC-P50VT25 is also Wi-Fi ready (just add a USB wireless adapter) for full access to VIERA Cast online content (Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, Picasa, Bloomberg, and now Netflix, Skype, Pandora, Twitter, and more).
Custom installers will love the TC-P50VT25 for its four HDMI inputs, RS-232 port for easy integration with advanced touchscreen remote control systems, and ISFccc (Imaging Science Foundation Certified Calibration Configuration) menus. Cinemaphiles will love it for its THX Movie Mode and 24p cinematic playback capability (movies are played back at a flicker-free 96 KHz, without any of that nasty motion interpolation you find on most LCD TVs). And environmentally conscious consumers will love it for its 100,000-hour panel life and entirely lead- and mercury-free construction.
Honestly, what's not to love? (Okay, maybe the fact that it only comes with one pair of 3D glasses.)
