Axiim Q Receiver Can Deliver 7.1 Channels of HD Sound Without Wires

By Rachel Cericola

We love almost everything about home theater. The one thing that doesn't seem to add a whole lot to the experience is that wire mess. Of course, we realize it has a purpose. However, the folks at Axiim have come up with an interesting, clutter-free solution.

The company is out at CES 2016 in Las Vegas showing off the Axiim Q, a home theater receiver that promises up to 7.1 channels of HD surround sound, all without wires. There's even an Axiim Q home theater system, which includes a collection of wireless speakers.

The Kirkland, Washington-based consumer electronics company designed the Axiim Q for users that don't want to get caught up in a web of wires, but don't want to settle for a soundbar either. The Axiim Q is all about the Wireless Speaker & Audio Association (WiSA) standard, which basically allows users to mix and match wireless components.

The Axiim Q AVR promises high-resolution 24-bit, 96kHz wireless surround sound almost instantly out of the box. It does that via built-in Bluetooth support. Other features include a 10-band graphics equalizer, six HDMI inputs, and support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio (which is currently in beta). There's even an app for iOS and Android devices.

If you're looking for a complete solution, the Axiim Q home theater system packages the receiver with wireless speakers. It's available in 5.1 and 7.1 configurations.

That said, you don't necessarily need Axiim speakers to make wireless magic. At this week's show, the Axiim Q has been paired with Klipsch speakers to show how the system can play nice with third-party brands.

"Axiim Q is a new design paradigm over traditional wired audio/video receivers, so we went to great lengths to make sure that it would be easy for our third-party partners to achieve full interoperability," said James Hammer, CEO of Axiim, Inc. "Here at CES, we are showing Axiim Q working with new wireless prototypes from Klipsch, a tech-driven audio company. This is more than a proof of concept -- this is new technology in action."

Currently, the Axiim Q is being sold on a limited, selective basis to customers that are participating in the company's Beta review program. However, we can expect the Axiim Q to be available to the masses sometime in the second quarter of 2015. Pricing information is expected to come closer to the release date.
