Samsung Unveils 2015 Smart TV Platform Based on Tizen O/S

LG may have webOS, but Samsung has Tizen!

Just a few short weeks after LG Electronics announced plans to upgrade the company's Smart TV platform, Samsung Electronics has its own introductions to make. The company just debuted the Tizen operating system for 2015.

Tizen is a standardized open-source platform, which means it should deliver more content on more devices than ever before. By adding Tizen, Samsung is inviting developers to create new, compatible content, so that viewers can experience an unlimited amount of entertainment possibilities.

The new Smart Hub will feature one screen for quick, easy access. The first thing that viewers will typically see will feature all of the most recently viewed content, as well as recommendations based on preferences. Tizen also has optimized four-direction control.

Tizen can also sync the TV with other devices, via WiFi Direct. This allows users to share content from a smartphone or tablet with one click, as well as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). From there, Samsung's Smart TV software will search for compatible devices and react accordingly. In some cases, it can create a second-screen experience or users can go from one room to the other, without missing any of the on-screen action.

Samsung is also planning to add new content to Tizen through a variety of partnerships. Samsung Sports Live will allow users to watch live games while checking team and player stats on the same screen. PlayStation Now can deliver hundreds of PlayStation 3 games directly on the TV, without the need for a separate console. (Users will need the DualShock 4 controller, though.) Ubisoft is putting its popular Just Dance Now game directly on the TV, with support for multiple players. Bingo HOME: Race to Earth is a new gaming title that will be available on the TV and smart devices in the home, in conjunction with the new DreamWorks Animation movie. And finally, Samsung's own Milk Video will curate popular and interesting video clips from a list of almost 50 content providers.

"Building our Smart Platform around Tizen is a groundbreaking step towards a much more intelligent and integrated system," said Won Jin Lee, executive vice president of the visual display business at Samsung Electronics. "Tizen not only enriches the entertainment experience for our customers today, but unlocks great potential for the future in home entertainment."

Samsung is hoping that Tizen will make the company's Smart TVs part of a bigger ecosystem, with new partners and a better overall entertainment experience. Although no exact TV models have been formally announced yet, Samsung plans to put Tizen on all of the company's Smart TVs for 2015.
