At CES in Las Vegas this week, LG is showing off what can be done with Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) TVs. OLED TVs are already winning the TV picture quality war, garnering praise among consumers and critics for their deep immersive blacks and rich saturated colors. But OLED technology also enables some interesting design choices. Because OLED panels are so thin and flexible, one could theoretically roll up an OLED panel into a tube when not in use and make it just about disappear. Rollable OLED. I call it "ROLED."
At CES this year, theory has been turned into practice as LG has unveiled its SIGNATURE OLED TV R (model 65R9) rollable OLED TV. This 65-inch 4K UHD TV rolls up into its base when not in use, virtually disappearing from view. The base doubles as a soundbar, which means it can still provide musical entertainment even when the screen is neatly tucked away. And in case you'd like a subtle and discrete screen to display things like the time, weather, news stories and album artwork, the 65R9 has a "line view" mode which displays only a small sliver of a screen above its base.
As far as picture and sound quality are concerned, the 65R9 is no slouch either. The set features full 4K Ultra HD resolution with support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) and a 4.2 channel sound bar with 100 watts of peak output. Like LG's current line-up, the R9 has both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound on board.
The set's picture processing and smart TV features are handled by LG's second generation Alpha 9 processor. You'll find all the usual streaming apps on board (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc.). And if you're looking for third party smart home integration, you'll find support for Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, iTunes and AirPlay.
Details on pricing and availablility were not available at press time, but the company does expect to begin shipping the set later this year.
