The Path to Paradise: An Interview with Radio Paradise Founder, William Goldsmith

By Chris Boylan

In the year 2000, veteran radio disc jockey William Goldsmith decided to try something new. Along with his wife Rebecca, William launched Radio Paradise, an internet-based streaming radio station. Tired of having to follow the stringent format restrictions, rotation requirements and playback "guidelines" of commercial radio stations, William decided to bring his vision of radio to the world via the internet.

23 years later, Radio Paradise is thriving, delivering an eclectic and enjoyable mix of music from hard rock to jazz to folk music to modern rock to classical, all seamlesly entwined with the occasional bit of insightful commentary thrown in. The station now broadcasts four independent streams to hundreds of thousands of listeners worldwide: there's the main mix, a global mix, a mellow mix and a rock mix. All four streams are available in fully lossless CD quality using the FLAC codec.

You can find Radio Paradise on its web site (RadioParadise.com), or in a native Radio Paradise app available for iOS, Android and Roku. It's also available within Sonos, BluOS, Amazon Alexa and TuneIn Radio, though William recommends against using TuneIn if you can help it (the lossless stream is not available there). I've listened to Radio Paradise for years, on my phone, on my main rig and in my car, and am always amazed by the sheer breadth and quality of the musical selection. With its lossless FLAC stream, Radio Paradise is an excellent source for the speakers, receivers, streamers and other gear we write about on Big Picture Big Sound and eCoustics.

We recently had a chance to sit down with William and chatted with him about the past, present and future of Radio Paradise. William has big plans for the station: VR broadcasting with immersive audio and video, a partnership with the "Burning Man" festival, expanding out to more genres of music and maybe even getting into high res audio streaming. William (and daughter Alanna) are even launching a new radio show called "Radio 2050" which is designed to help us make the world a better place with simple solutions to our most pressing problems.
