MartinLogan Goes Super Thin for the EFX On-Wall Speaker

By Rachel Cericola

Need to go on a diet? Probably not, but your audio may need a little intervention. MartinLogan has just the thing to motivate you to slim down that sound system: the EFX hybrid electrostatic on-wall speaker.

The company says that the newly announced EFX is its slimmest reference quality on-wall solution to date. It's also pretty cool looking, housed in an ultra-ridged extruded aluminum and composite AirFrame. That doesn't just make the speaker look pretty, but it should sound pretty as well. MartinLogan says that the design maximizes the playable surface area and dipole sound radiation.

Featuring a Curvilinear Line Source (CLS) XStat transducer and MicroPerf design, the EFX boasts an advanced crossover topology that may be familiar to those with MartinLogan's CLX loudspeaker. The process of creating that transducer includes a conductive coating applied to the polymer surface at the atomic level, using a plasma bonding process. Then, according to MartinLogan, a proprietary compound is driven into the surface of the polymer film in an oxygen-free argon chamber. That process is just one of the things that makes this piece so unique -- and so accurate.

Designed for use as a center-channel or surround solution, the EFX can hang perfectly with any flat-panel TV. Featuring a low-voltage DC power supply and proprietary five-way binding posts, the EFX also comes with a pivoting wall bracket, so you can mount and adjust until your heart and ears are content.

"With each passing year, an ever increasing number of audio enthusiasts are turning to space-saving on-wall speakers, especially when assembling a high-performance home theater system. Since launching the original Stylos on-wall electrostatic speaker nearly 20 years ago, the engineering behind on-wall solutions has improved dramatically, resulting in the ability to build a truly reference quality system without sacrificing floor space," said Justin Bright, MartinLogan's director of marketing. "We are proud to continue offering audiophile quality home theater solutions that will keep up with even our most ambitious flag ship models."

MartinLogan says that the EFX on-wall electrostatic speakers are shipping now, priced at $3095 per pair.
