CES: Samsung LED 9000, 8000 and 7000 LCDs Ready for 3D Blu-rays Like Monsters Vs. Aliens

In the revelation of their "3D Home Eco System" for the next generation of home entertainment, Samsung touched upon the "Depth Paradox" that their product designers face: Consumers seem compelled by thinner and thinner displays, while the picture itself must now add perceived depth in order to keep pace with the hot trend of 3D HDTV. The Samsung Eco system covers their entire product line and beyond, to give the best possible 3D experience. That includes of course the TV itself, and the Blu-ray player as the principal source component, although Samsung promises that their video processor will be able to convert two-dimensional footage to 3D in real-time as well. In addition, the home theater chain will incorporate HT audio systems for immersive sound, the necessary glasses, and of course the proper content.

To that end, special guest Jeffrey Katzenberg of DreamWorks Animation made a surprise appearance, bespectacled with his 3D eyewear and joined by a technology partner from Technicolor. He hit us with some impressive numbers, such as the fact that all of his studios' movies since 2007 have been created in 3D, that 10 out of the 170 original films of 2009 were released in 3D, and that four of the Top Ten films of the year were shown theatrically in 3D. He also announced that his Monsters Vs. Aliens--the first movie authored in Stereoscopic 3D--would indeed be released as a 3D Blu-ray in 2010, now that the Blu-ray disc Association has finalized the specifications for the format.

Samsung's 3D-capable displays include the LED 9000 LCD TV series, coming in at a nigh-insane .3 inches thick (yes, that's three-tenths of one inch), which also offers funky next-gen features like the ability to watch live TV on the remote control; the LED 8000 Series which delivers blacker blacks for superior contrast without haloing, with a sweet four-leg tabletop stand; and the LED 7000 "Touch of Color," in the Mystic Earth shade.

Before the event was over, Mr. Katzenberg presented Samsung with the world's first copy of the 3D Monsters Vs. Aliens Blu-ray. He was also spotted marveling at the thinness of the LED 9000 LED LCD on stage: It really is that eye-catching.
