chip1,
First off, test tones aside, have you tried playing a disc and, if so, how does it sound?
The player outputs can only be lowered, not raised. If you have the levels set to 0 and are getting virtually no audio, then, the problem has to be (A) a bad player, or (B) the level trims in your receiver are too low. While most AVRs/prepros cannot process audio from the analog inputs, they usually can control the output levels and do so independent of the output levels for digital sources. I am guessing that your prepro has the levels for analog channels turned way down.
The sub definitely needs to be boosted in your processor. LFE is recorded 10db low on purpose and needs to be boosted back up. If you set any speakers to small in the player, the sub is dropped by another 5db and you will need to boost the .1 channel by 15db to get proper bass response. Many processors have a setting specifically for the analog subwoofer boost.
btw, you don't need to set the digital outputs to PCM. That setting has no effect on internal player decoding with the BD55.
I'm not familiar with your Bryston SP2. But, from what I can see on line, it's obviously a powerful processor. So, unless you have a faulty BD55, you ought to be able to get full, excellent sound with your prepro.
