Default hdmi to dvi vs. component video for Blu-ray

I hope I am posting in the right section, kinda new.
Read some of the post on the bd80 panasonic set up and they are very helpful, I have several panasonic dvd players and they haven't failed me yet that's why I purchased the bd80. Problem, hdmi to dvi on tv
    1. this is my equipment that I am trying to hookup to the bd80
rcvr yamaha rxv2500 no hdmi input only digital and analog
tv toshiba 65h82 with dvi input not hdmi
speakers polks fr cntr rear front effects and sub

    2. from the post on the bd80 seems like I will have to go the analog route to get the true bd usage from the dvd player and the rcvr via rca cables and not the digital and I think that I can use an hdmi cable with a dvi to hdmi adapter to get the best picture form the player to the older tv, or would the component video out get better picture?? all help and info is greatly appreciated..

Yes, best sound in your configuration will be multi-channel (5.1 or 7.1) analog outputs from player to receiver. And your best video connection will be HDMI out from player to TV using a DVI adapter. If you use component video, you will be limited to a max of 1080i resolution for blu-ray discs (high enough for you) and 480p from DVDs. I believe your TV's native resolution is actually 720p so you should set the HDMI output resolution to 720p (not 1080i or 1080p). Hopefully your TV is OK with its HDCP support over that DVI input, otherwise you might have trouble with the video signal. But hey, if you do have trouble, flat panel 1080p HDTVs are getting cheaper all the time.

A couple of settings you should keep in mind:
    • Set HDMI Audio to OFF
    • Set High Clarity Audio to ON (unless you will be using the analog video outputs for anything)
    • Set BD-Secondary Audio to OFF (in the digital audio set-up menu) - this will assure you get the full lossless surround decoded by the player. You will need to turn this back on if you want to listen to PiP/BonusView commentary
    • Make sure you set the analog audio output to 2+5.1-ch or 7.1-ch depending on how many channels you are going to use on the receiver. When you say "front effects" channels on your Yamaha, I'm assuming you mean that Yamaha DSP thing that adds ambience or height to the front channels. If you only have one rear pair of surround channels (no side surrounds), then you should use the 2+5.1-ch output or use the 7.1-ch output and turn off the rear channels in the player's speaker set-up panel
    • Be sure to use an SPL meter (if you have one) and take some distance measurements in order to set up the appropriate levels and delay for each channel in the BD80 for its analog outputs.
    • Check your receiver's manual for how you boost the LFE channel (for the multi-channel analog inputs) by 10 dB - you will need it
    • Consider also hooking up a fiberoptic or coax digital connection for DVD use. This will allow you to get the benefits of the Yamaha YPAO calibration/EQ as well as legacy DTS extensions like DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 which the BD80 do not natively support (though if you are using only 5.1 channels from the player and not 7.1, then this is less important). I'm pretty sure the YPAO calibration and bass management is not applied to the multi-channel analog inputs on your receiver, but you should check your manual for details about that. Some high-end receivers do apply bass management/EQ/etc. to the multi-channel analog inputs as well.

Anyway... this is all that comes to mind off the top of my head.

If you haven't bought the player yet, please consider buying it on Amazon.com via any of our amazon links as this is what keeps the site up and running.

    Hi, Maury,

Well the TV is supposed to have support for HDCP so you should be fine, but if you do have a problem, you can revert to the analog outputs (component video). The only thing there is that the TV will have to do the upconversion on standard DVDs from 480p to 720p.

And cool on the amazon thing,m but make sure to start your session from any of our Amazon links so that BPBS gets the referral.

A fairly complete list of our different affiliate partners is available in the Shop With Us link near the top of all pages on the site.
