OLDER HDMI input with NEW DTS-MASTER output? Will it work?

Hello Chris: I want to thank you for your excellent article on the Panasonic V80 review I read online. Also your mentioning HDMI hookups and the new audio codec's...It's really quite amazing and yet confusing at the same time.

I bought the Panasonic BDP80 after being disgusted with Sony's attempt to throw me a bone since the BD-1 blu ray machine.
The Panasonic is quite amazing all the features and price point compared to the Sony DDBP-S2000es or 5000es. I guess one pays for all the styling Sony offers.

After buying a whole new receiver, since I was upset that I seemed to not be acquiring the new sound codec's and wanted to receive confirmation of DTS-Master and Dolby True Audio, (to which I never received anyway from the new receiver, only DTS-Dolby Dig showed on the new receivers face plate), I wanted to just ask...if my Marantz sr-7001 has HDMI in's and 1 out, can I just hook up the hdmi out on the Panasonic into the Marantz and still receive the new DTS-Dolby lossless codec's?
I tried the 7.1 analog outs...and there seems to be no difference actually in sound to me...
Anybody been going through what I have?

    Hi,

Unfortunately the SR7001 receiver does not support native decoding of DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD. You can check the sr7001 user manual online and see there is no reference to these formats.

But because your receiver does support multi-channel PCM Audio decoding over HDMI, you can still take advantage of the full quality of these lossless surround sound formats. You simply need to set your Panasonic's Digital Audio Output to "PCM" for both "Dolby" and "DTS" and set BD-Secondary Audio to "OFF." This will allow the player to decode everything to PCM (with no loss) and send this multi-channel PCM signal to your receiver for conversion to analog. Really the only drawback to this is that you will never see "Dolby TrueHD" or "DTS-HD" appear on your receiver's display. To get this to happen, you'd have to buy a new receiver that *does* decode DTS-HD Master Audio on-board.

You can see which audio track your BD80 is reading off the disc, however, by hitting the Panasonic player's "Display" button during playback and then selecting "Disc... Signal Type" or "Play... Playback Information Window."

    I hope that helps.
