Question about Frequency Responses: Energy Speakers and Mirage subwoofer

Hi,
I got a good deal on a Mirage omni s12 subwoofer and now I am trying to match speakers to go with it for a 7.1 set-up. The speakers I want (the Energy Take classics) have a frequency response starting at 110hz and my subwoofer has 120hz cut-off. I heard that you have to overlap the frequencies, but if I do that, I'll be maxing out my sub, and to me I don't think that's a good idea or will sound good.
Is this something I should be concerned about, or should I try to find speakers with a lower frequency response to better match my sub?

You should be just fine with that combination of subwoofer and satellites. They're actually made by the same parent company (Mirage and Energy are both owned by Klipsch). The recommended crossover for the Take 5 satellites is between 100 and 120 Hz, and the Omni S12 is adjustable up to 120 Hz so it will definitely extend high enough into the mid bass to match the satellites' output. Setting any subwoofer above 110 or 120 Hz is not a good idea anyway, as bass frequencies are more directional at higher frequencies and this can detract from the illusion that the bass is coming from the main speakers.

I wouldn't put the sub right in a corner or up against a wall, though as this would probably make the bass overly boomy. You might have to experiment a bit with sub placement to get the best results but really this is true for any subwoofer and speaker combination.

BTW, I know you said you were going to do a 7.1-channel system. Your best bet is to go with the same speakers all around but the Take satellite speakers are not sold separately as far as I know, so you'll probably need to buy 2 5-packs and find some other use for the extra 3 speakers (or use two of them for a Dolby PLIIz set up - 9.1, yeah baby!).

BTW, I found a guy on ebay selling the take 5 classic speakers as singles.
