How to Get PC Streaming to Work on Samsung BD-P3600/BD-P4600

We've gotten a few folks writing in asking about how to set up the "PC Streaming" function on the new Samsung Blu-ray Disc players and actually we just got a "cheat sheet" from one of our techie friends at Samsung. Apparently it is a little tricky, particularly in Vista (easier in XP), but it can be done. If you've got comments on this procedure please post them here in the thread as this is a "living document."

Note: Please do not cut and paste this post or material. If you'd like to share this information, please link directly to this thread.

Setting up your PC for Streaming Content with Samsung Blu-ray Disc Players:

Your Samsung BD player can access files on a Windows Vista or XP machine. The BD player does this by recognizing shared folders. With that said, set up shared folders with the files that you want your BD player to access. For help setting up shared folders, please see the Tips section below.

    PC Connection Instructions:

Connect your BD player to the network you want to access, either wired or wirelessly. Test the connection: Menu > Setup > Network Setup > Network Connection Test. Once the connection is tested and working, and you have your shared folders set up, you’re ready to use PC Connect.

PC Connect to Windows XP PC:
    1. Make sure the PC you’re connecting to is turned on.
    2. Press the menu button on the BD player. When in the menu, press the red ‘A’ button labeled network search. (If you don’t see the network search option, press the left arrow key on the remote). You’ll have the option to choose Auto or Manual setup. Select Auto by pressing Enter.
    3. Once the BD player is done searching, it will display the computers it has found on the network. Select the proper computer using the up and down buttons on the remote and press Enter.
    4. Provide userid and password you use to connect (log on) to this Windows PC
    5. If your PC is not found via the "Auto" search or your userid/password does not work, then you can switch over to Manual mode by clicking "Manual" (next to "Auto"). You will then need to know your PC's virtual IP address and share name.
      • From the Windows "Start" menu, hit "run" then type "cmd" to get to the command prompt
      • At the command prompt, type "ipconfig/all" to display your IP address, among other things.
      • Copy your IP address into the Manual Search "IP address" form on the Samsung
      • In Windows Explorer (Windows button + "E" key), select your root folder of your main hard drive (e.g., the "C" drive), right click on this and select "Sharing and Security" - make sure this folder is set to share and copy over the share name (e.g., "C$")
      • provide userid and password you use to log into this PC
    6. The BD player will then show you different shared folders on that PC. Select the proper folder by pressing Enter.
    7. You can now select Video, Music, or Photos by going to the corresponding menu label within the BD player. From there you’ll be able to access your photos under the Photo tab, music under the Music tab and video under the Video tab.

    Tips:
    • With windows XP, you may need to put your documents in the Shared Documents folder under My Computer.
    • If you create another folder within the Shared Documents, you must turn on file sharing within that folder. To do that, right click on the folder and select Sharing and Security. Under Network Sharing and Security, check the box that says Share this folder on the network. Press ok.
    • If you have security software running (firewall), you may need to turn it off, or change the permissions to allow other devices to access the PC.
    • If you are running XP Home, then connect to the PC as a non-admin user. Connecting as an admin may cause authentication errors.
    • According to a poster in this thread, Samsung support recommends that you disable "simple file sharing" in Windows XP. You can read more about how to do that here on the Microsoft support site. For some users (but not all), changing this setting allows the player to see networked PCs in "Auto" mode.
    • The only video files that can be played are Divx (divx and AVI file extensions).

PC Connect to Windows Vista PC:
    1. Make sure the PC you’re connecting to is turned on.
    2. Press the menu button on the BD player. When in the menu, press the red ‘A’ button labeled network search. You’ll have the option to choose Auto or Manual setup. Select Manual by pressing Enter.
    3. Enter the IP address of the PC you’re trying to access by using the number keys and left and right buttons on the remote. Once you have typed the correct IP address, press the Enter button. (To find your IP address with Vista, click the windows icon in the bottom left and in the search bar, type CMD and press Enter. Within the command prompt, type ipconfig and press enter. Your IP address is listed and usually starts with a 192 number.)
    4. After entering the IP address, you’ll be prompted to input the name of the shared folder you are trying to access. Do so and press the blue ‘D’ button. (This step is case sensitive). (TIP: Give you shared folder a short name to make you life easier)
    5. Next, you’ll need to input the user name of your PC. Do this and press the blue ‘D’ button. (This step is case sensitive).
    6. Last, you must enter the password for the computer and press the blue ‘D’ button. (This step is case sensitive).
    7. You can now select Video, Music, or Photos. From there you’ll be able to access the corresponding files.

    Tips:
    • With Windows Vista, your shared folders must be located in the root part of the C:\ drive.
    1. Simply right click the folder you want to share. Select the Share… option. In the new File Sharing window, press the Share button located in the bottom right, press continue, then press Done.
    2. Right click on the same folder and select Properties. Click on the Sharing tab. From there, select Advanced Sharing…, select continue. Click the Permissions button on the new menu that just opened. Cick Add…, then click Advanced… Now, click the Find Now button. Within the search results field, select Administrators, then press the OK button. Press OK again. Cick Add…, then click Advanced… Now, click the Find Now button. Within the search results field, select Everyone, then press the OK button. Press OK again.
    3. Now, highlight the User under the Group of user names and then click Remove. Next, press OK and press OK again.
    4. Last part: Press the Share… button. Choose Change sharing Permissions and then click the Share button and press continue, then press Done and lastly press the Close button. You’re good to go.

    Windows 7

Tips: forum user "nhgoogle" reports getting this to work on Windows 7 by doing the following:
    • Use manual connect mode
    • Use shared name folder less than 12 characters
    • Use a uname/passwd for account other than "admin"

    1. I don't have PC but only Apple MAC computer, 1 iMac and 1disk shared in my network by Airport Extreme... i can use this disk from my work windows laptop without problem, my question: Is BD-P3600 capable to streaming from this disk or a disk shared by a MAC?

    2. I have DivX media, MP3 media (inside my iTunes library), H264 HD media and Picture take from my 10Mpixel camera..... my question: Is BD-P3600 capable to streaming all this format and specially for Picture, is capable to start a slideshow with transaction effect and song in background?

Thanks for you answer, but before to get this fantastic BD player i would like to know if i resolve also the problem to stream all my personal media from my mac.

I was interesting to get a PS3 device , that is compatible with Apple MAC device by this product Nullriver Software : Products : MediaLink but if BD-P3600 can all this... i will get it...

    Hi, Marco,

Not sure as I have not tested the Samsung player yet... it was sent to the wrong adress so we're still waiting for our review sample to arrive. But actually I know very little about Macs... Your best bet would be to read the manual and see what it says about file type and O/S support.

I took a quick look at the manual myself, and it seems to say that only MP3, JPEG, AVI, AVCHD, WMA and Divx file types are supported, and it says nothing about Mac support so I would guess this is a PC-only thing.

    Here's a link to the BD-P3600 manual:

    Good luck.

Got the BD-P3600. After being unable myself to get USERID/PW to work, I updated the first post with information on how to do a "Manual" search instead of "Auto" which did work for me, and which gave me access to the entire C drive, instead of just select folders.

Thanks for the info especially the tips on Windows Vista. I am having problems with the set up. I'll try your tip on putting my shared folders on the root part of the C:\ drive. But I may ask some questions soon in case it doesn't work still. Thanks again.

While this is helpful, I'd REALLY like to know on XP what differentiates computers found via Auto and those not found.

Manual addition is time consuming and forgotten at power-off making it nearly useless.

I very much like the idea of displaying my photos this way, but I need Auto mode to make it worth my time.

Is there a specific workgroup it looks in? does it only search certain IPs?

    Tips:
    • With windows XP, the only way to share files is to put them in the Shared Documents folder under My Computer.
    • The only video files that can be played are Divx (divx and AVI file extensions).

I have recently purchased a 3600 and am having issues conecting to my PC. I have the 3600 directly conected, by lan line, to my router. It will recoginze several PC's on the network. I have a laptop running XP that when I type in my user ID and password I can get access on the blueray. When I try to contect to my other PC, conected to the rounter wireless, I get an error saying wrong user id or password. This happens weather I do manual or auto setup. My wireless PC is not passworded. Sugestions?

    Windows XP Home

I would like to add a small detail to Windows XP setup. If the PC you are connecting to is running Windows XP Home, then use a non-administrator user to connect. Using a user with administrative privileges will give authentication errors.

OK I could successfully connect. But there is a small annoyance and I wanted to check if anyone knows a way around it. After every power on, the player loses details of the shared computer and I have re-enter the IP, username, password etc. Is there a way to save this info?
