Depends on how close you like to sit to the screen, but yes, I would say the nominal price increase you'd pay now for 1080p on a 42-inch set over 720p is worthwhile. Things like text in particular look much better when they can be rendered in their native resolution, regardless of screen size.

A 1080p panel can represent 1080i or 1080p inputs precisely (1 to 1 pixel match).
