Default No TV sound?

I need help!! I just bought an Onkyo tx-sr606 receiver and did the following hookups. One HDMI cable from my dvd to the receiver in (HDMI1) and one HDMI cable from the receiver (out) to my HDTV (in). This is the way the manual said to do the hookup I have no cable box just an antena to get high def channels. Now I assigned the HDMI 1 and got great results when playing my dvd. My question is, how do I get sound from just my tv to the receiver? I thought I needed just one HDMI cable from the receiver to tv and one from the receiver to the dvd. This must not be the case because I get no tv sound. Do I need an input from the tv to the receiver?

Hi tonman,

The first question I have for you is, what model television do you have? Also, can it pass an audio signal over HDMI and/or an optical output?

Thanks for the reply, I have a samsung LN-T4069F HDTV. I have 3 HDMI inputs and 1 digital audio out (optical). Is that the info you needed?

With your current connections you are not connecting the TV's internal tuner's audio output back to the receiver which you need to do if you want to get surround sound (or really any sound) from the TV's built-in tuner to come through the receiver and speakers.

Your TV should have an optical digital output. Connect this to an available input on the receiver and you will have TV sound. You can also use the TV's stereo analog output to the receiver but then you will not get discrete 5.1-channel surround sound which you *will* get from the fiberoptic digital output (on shows where this is available).

Regards,

-Chris

What he said.

You'll definitely need to use your set's optical output to connect to your receiver. Lets us know how it all works out.
