    connecting

following items on the way....sony blu-ray 350,sony 820 receiver, toshiba hdtv. question......dish net. dvr hd sat.box on the way..has 1 hdmi port.reveiver has 3 hdmi in one out...hdtv has (I think 4hdmi in) If I run hdmi from sat box to reveiver,blu-ray hdmi to reveiver, then hdmi to hdtv from receiver I figure this will work for best picture and sound...However,I don't want to have the receiver on every time I have the tv on..can I run comp.jacks from sat box to hdtv at same time as hdmi from receiver when receiver is running.or is there a better way? I don't know which source the tv will pick up when watching the tv when reveiver is on hdmi or comp.hook up. Hope I made some since..thank's in advance....Gary

    Damn. Two words: "Try punctuation!"

Yes, on the DISH receivers I've used/tested (ViP622 and ViP722) the component and HDMI outputs are active concurrently with the same signal (as long as the receiver is set to single TV mode), and from what I've read the same is true for the Sony S350 Blu-ray Disc player, so you could hook up both the HDMI and component video outputs separately to the TV and to the receiver as you describe. Just remember to hook up an analog stereo audio connection for each device as well.

Also, DVDs will NOT be upconverted by the S350 over component (only over HDMI) so with the component video connection you'll be relying on your TV to do the upconversion of standard DVDs.

As for which input would be active, um... that would be whichever one you select, right? Select (for example) Component 1 on the TV for the satellite box over component and Component 2 on the TV for the Blu-ray player over component, and select HDMI 1 for everything that is going through the receiver when you want sound to go through the receiver.

    Does that answer your questions?

    Good luck.

Thank's for the reply! Let's see if I got this right.1. when you speak of analog connection's do you mean for programming not in high def.? 2. If I'm running hdmi cable from blu-ray upscaling dvd player to hd receiver, and hdmi cable to hdtv from the reveiver am I getting upscaling for standard dvd's?....thank's..Gary

If you want to connect the Blu-ray player and the DISH DVR to the TV using component video (so that the receiver will not need to be on to watch these using the TV speakers), then you need to also connect analog audio connections (left/right, usually white/red cables) from the DISH DVR and Blu-ray player into the TV along with the component video connections. Otherwise you will have no sound. This is for high def or standard def material. Component video never carries sound, only video.

And Yes, if you connect the Sony Blu-ray player to the receiver using HDMI, and then from the receiver to the TV using HDMI then you will be getting DVDs upconverted to 1080p by the Blu-ray player.

    Later,

You might also check to see if the receiver has an HDMI pass-through mode when the unit is is standby mode (OFF but with power still being sent to it). Apparently the newest Onkyo receivers have this as a set-up option so you can still pass the HDMI signal through the receiver when the unit it in standby. Check your receiver's owner's manual to see if the Sony has anything comparable.
