If the receiver does not have HDMI inputs, then you have it connected the best way already. HDMI cable from player to TV, fiberoptic cable from player to receiver. Make sure in the player's "Digital Audio Output" setting, you have both Dolby Digital and DTS set to "bitstream" (not PCM).

If all those remotes are driving you crazy, I would recommend getting a universal remote like a Logitech Harmony. With that you can set up simple activities which power up multiple components and allow you to control multiple devices easily from a single remote.

And I'm not sure how your first born child relates to this discussion, but I hope all goes well with that!
