    Default AV Receiver question

I have a Yamaha RX V793 AV Receiver that I upgraded. I would
like to somehow use it for another system if I can add an I/O or
converter box that would make it compatible with an HD set up?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. 3DM

    Hi, 3DM,

There's no reason you can't use this receiver in an HD set-up, but you just won't be able to use it to switch any HD video. Your receiver lacks component video or HDMI inputs (and these cannot be added via any kind of add-on box), so it cannot switch high def video sources. But it can accept the Dolby Digital output of a DVD player, an HDTV or an HD cable box and do discrete 5.1 channel sound from these sources.

The ony things your receiver *cannot* do are accept DTS surround sound (which is available on many DVDs and Blu-ray Discs) and it cannot accept a 5.1-channel analog input from a source like a Blu-ray Disc player with an on-board audio decoder.

Using it in a secondary system for audio, and maybe with a DVD, HDTV and cable or satellite box would be fine. Just plug the diigital audio outputs into the receiver and plug the video outputs directly into your HDTV.

    Hope that helps.
