Exclamation Onkyo receiver (txsr604) cutting out after a few seconds

The receiver turns off about 3 seconds after turning it on. I hear 2 "clicks" (like relays) when I turn it on, and the display lights up, then a few seconds later 2 more clicks and the display goes blank - and the standby LED flashes (I think it is supposed to stay lit continuously).
This happens with or without speakers connected - but no sound is ever produced.

Sounds like an internal short.
Are you sure that no strands of wire are shorting the speaker terminals???

Does the Onkyo have a source voltage selector? If so it could be set to the wrong position.

Turn the receiver over to see if any foreign object is loose inside.
