I just need some help on getting my ps3hooked up to the receiver properly. I have a 3 yr old Sony Bravia xbr and a yamaha rx-v365. I had previously been talking to Chris boylan via email. Want to say sorry to him that I had peons getting back here to ask. I hope someone can help. I think I've alredy determined that it has the hdmi INS and outs just not enough , nor do I think they are able to do the actual decoding to even use it. Anyways if anyone can help I'd be very thankful.

If you keep your 365, then you will need to connect both the HDMI output *and* the fiberoptic digital audio output from your PS3 to the receiver, then HDMI output from receiver to the TV. I think there is a menu setting on the PS3 to enable the fiberoptic (S/PDIF) digital audio output when you are also using HDMI. The problem with keeping the 365 receiver is that there is no way to support the newest Blu-ray Disc audio codecs from the PS3 - Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio and multi-channel PCM - these formats can only be carried over HDMI or multi-channel analog outputs (but the PS3 does not have multi-channel analog outputs, and your receiver doesn't support audio decoding over HDMI). What happens when you use fiberoptic digital output instead of HDMI is that Dolby TrueHD is downgraded to regular Dolby Digital, DTS-HD is downgraded to regular DTS and multi-channel PCM is actually downgraded to two channel (stereo) PCM. If you upgrade to the 465 or above, then you should set your PS3 to PCM output over HDMI. This will allow the PS3 to extract the PCM mix from DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD soundtracks and send these to your receiver for decoding via HDMI. Here's a link to the complete current line of Yahama receivers, with some notes about the differences: Amazon.com: Yamaha's 65 Series Home Theater Receivers Hope that helps. -Chris |

Thx much for the help man. I understand now. I see that my best bet or what I want to do is get the 465.I watch way too much blu Ray and play too many games on the 360 to not be getting my full audio quality. If u have any sugg. About how I get my 465 up and going let me know. Think it will be a lol easier w. The upgrade . Thx.

So are you saying when I get the 465 receiver I'm still going to need to run fiber optic? Because I do have one of the 1st editions of 60gb ps3. Or were you just saying to make sure to correct my audio settings?
Thx |

Appreciate all the help. I'm wanting to upgrade my hdmi cables.if I should be asking someplace else just tell me where. I wondered if I upgraded to this monster cable 1000 series that has the lifetime upgrades with it. The question is, if I get that. And run that from say my ps3. When I run it back out won't I technically have to buy two of the cords? If I just run it to a regular hdmi cable wouldn't it slow it down or change the full quality I'd be getting.

In the video settings, choose PCM instead of bitstream on your PS3.
For the audio settings, choose automatic, your PS3 will then output the right information based on what is on the DVD or Blu-Ray. Make sure your receiver is setup to Direct, or Pure or PCM, whatever your manual says is correct to receive multichannel PCM. To see what the PS3 is sending, use the Select button during playback. Your receiver will never display the Dolby or DTS symbol, because the decoding is done by the PS3 (these symbols indicate your receiver is receiving the Dolby or DTS and is decoding it for playback). As for HDMI cables, don't get snowed by expensive cables, it is a waste of money. Any HDMI cable 1.3 or above will give you the same results. A cheap one is as good as an expensive one. Monoprice.com is a great site for cheap cables, but you can even find them at places like Target. |
