need help w/ Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD with PS3

I'm having audio issues with my receiver Onkyo TX-SA706.
Problem is i can never get the receiver's frontal display to indicate DTS HD master audio neither Dolby TrueHD. I hooked up my PS3 to it with the HDMI cable 1.3b and changed the settings to output audio as Bitstream instead of Linear PCM via the HDMI ( if i do the other way around it never says dolby or dts, just multichannel)

    i read in dts site:
How do I know if my AV receiver is playing DTS-HD or DTS?
To see if your receiver is producing DTS-HD, look for the illuminated DTS-HD symbol on your receiver’s front-panel display.

But the problem is blu rays with dts HD master audio only shows dts! blu rays with dolby true HD only shows dolby digital. For example if i put Mummy or fast and furious, it will show just plain dts. Wall-e is the only one that shows dts es matrix. When i put Chris Botti or Dark Knight is just shows plain Dolby Digital.

what exactly is wrong here with my connection, or perhaps is not the connection but my receiver or PS3?!

Is not that i wanted to see those fancy dts-hd or dolby truehd lettering, but i would like to get the most our of my equiment..

The original Sony PS3 cannot bitstream DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD soundtracks, no matter how you have it set or connected. But this doesn't mean you can't enjoy the full quality of these soundtracks. Set the PS3's HDMI output to multi-channel PCM output instead of bitstream and the player will internally extract the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD soundtracks to their underlying multi-channel PCM soundtracks which will be sent over your HDMI cable to your receiver for conversion to analog. The receiver will then correctly display "multi-channel" as the input source type (multi-channel PCM).

There is no difference in quality in doing it this way vs. bitstream - in fact every DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD soundtrack has a PCM soundtrack encoded within it, so whether you extract this PCM track in the player or in the receiver, the end result is exactly the same. But you will never get the DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD logos to appear on your receiver. If you want the logos, you will have to get a different Blu-ray player (one that is capable of streaming DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD to your receiver over HDMI).

    Regards,

Use the Select Button to view the PS3 output

While the PS3 can't send the Dolby HD or DTS HD via Bitstream, it CAN and will decode them the same way your receiver does. Go to your Video options in the system settings and select PCM vs. Bitstream. Be sure your receiver is set to receive Direct or Pure or similar Multichannel PCM signals (not bitstream).

To see what your PS3 is sending, hit the select button during playback.

    Hi there dudes and dudettes!

I have just bought a new Amp - Onkyo 806 - which has support for Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD. I am using HDMI cables as inputs and output to my Samsung 46 inch LCD. I use my PS3 as a blu ray player and its connected to te amp bu HDMI cable. The PS3 is set to linear PCM.

When I play a blu ray disc, the PS3 output is TrueHD, but the light on my Amp that says "TrueHD" doesnt light up. It definitely sounds awesome though... the 7.1 system is great. Just wondering if its TrueHD i am getting or an upscaled Dolby 5.1?

    Thanks for your help!

The original PS3 cannot bitstream Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD but it can decode these formats on-board to multi-channel L-PCM sound. Sending it out as PCM from the player is really no different from bitstreaming it out and letting the receiver decode it except possibly some jitter introduced in the signal when transmitted as multi-channel PCM.

The newer PS3 "slim" can send Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA out as bitstream (which would light up your DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD indicators on your receiver) or you can choose to decode it in the player and send it out as PCM.

But overall, sound quality-wise, both should be comparable. DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD are both lossless compression codecs so the underlying PCM track that is extracted should be identical whether you perform that decompression function on the player or in the receiver.
