Yamaha's New 1,000-Watt NS-SW1000 Subwoofer Will Set You Back $2500

By Rachel Cericola

You probably know that your home theater setup should have a subwoofer. This is what puts you in the middle of the action, whether it's sports or movies. It can also make you feel the music.

Because most subwoofers sit out in the open on your living room or theater floor, a lot of people consider it to be a necessary eyesore. However, when it comes to Yamaha's latest, you'll probably want to show it off anyway. The NS-SW1000 is the company's new flagship 1,000-watt subwoofer. Yeah, that's not a typo.

This model is made for rocking the house and maybe even the block. It also has a host of interesting technologies to make it worthy of its premium price tag.

The first is Yamaha's own Twisted Flare Port, which boasts a better flow of air. It even has a 3-way mitered construction. That basically means that while the sub is rocking, it won't actually be rocking. It promises powerful, accurate bass, without noise-causing vibration.

The NS-SW1000 packs in a 12-inch driver with Kevlar fibers and Yamaha's DP200 digital amplifier integrated circuit, which supports a high current MOSFET discrete push-pull design for the output stage. This is combined with a triple-wound litz wire, high-capacity output coil and specially designed capacitors, so that the subwoofer can get down to some seriously low frequencies.

Other features include Yamaha Active Servo Technology II to compensate for the negative effects of speaker impedance, an Auto Power Standby, a heavy bass reflex enclosure with medium-density fiberboard, and cast-iron legs.

"The NS-SW1000 is the latest evolution of the subwoofer, representing our best technologies and structural design elements to deliver uncompromised sonic performance," said Bob Goedken, general manager of the AV Division at Yamaha Corporation of America. "Every component, including the black gloss finish, has been carefully considered to meet the demands of those seeking superior listening experiences."

The NS-SW1000 is shipping out with a shiny black finish that's reminiscent of a slick Yamaha piano. It's available now, priced at $2,499.95.
