Winter Soldier, Noah, Avengers, Transformers Movies Confirmed for Dolby Atmos Surround

By Rachel Cericola

Exactly one month ago, Dolby announced that the 2014 incarnation of Godzilla would be the 100th film to receive a Dolby Atmos mix. Now, audiences appear to be hungry for more.

The company just announced 11 new titles to be mixed and released in Dolby Atmos. These are major releases, from the likes of Disney, Marvel, Twentieth Century Fox, Lionsgate, DreamWorks Animation, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros. -- the types of films that would awesome to experience with a little extra oomph in the audio department.

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology that can support up to 128 discrete audio tracks and up to 64 unique speaker feeds. This allows filmmakers the freedom to place or move sounds anywhere in the movie.

It also sounds perfect for a slew of superheroes. A total of three upcoming Marvel releases will get the Dolby Atmos treatment. That lineup includes April 4's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1. Next year's next Avengers installment, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, will also get a Dolby Atmos mix when it debuts on May 1, 2015.

The rest of the films are all expected for 2014. Russell Crowe's big-budget take on Noah for Paramount will kick off this latest round of Dolby Atmos releases when it debuts this Friday, March 28. Rounding out the spring is Johnny Depp's sci-fi thriller Transcendence (April 17) and Disney's Jon Hamm sports flick, Million Dollar Arm (May 16).

Once the summer hits, there will be tons of well... hits, as well as explosions and other action to highlight the amazing technology behind Dolby Atmos. That lineup will include Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow (June 6), Transformers: Age of Extinction (June 27), and the return of our favorite aging heroes in The Expendables 3 (August 15). Also sandwiched in between all of those action flicks is a little something for the whole family, How to Train Your Dragon 2, which will debut on June 13.

The year will wind down with Warner Bros.'s highly anticipated film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again. This is the third installment in Peter Jackson's blockbuster series. It's also the second to get a Dolby Atmos mix, right behind December 2013's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The Hobbit: There and Back Again will hit Dolby Atmos-equipped theaters on December 17, 2014.
