Warner Bros. to Release Gravity Diamond Luxe Blu-ray with Dolby Atmos

By Rachel Cericola

With Interstellar burning up the box-office, Warner Bros. wants to remind you that they also had a really cool space-themed movie recently -- and they are about to make it even cooler.

The studio just announced plans to release the Gravity Diamond Luxe Blu-ray on February 10, 2015. Yes, this Blu-ray is a bit of a double-dip, but this new version will come packing a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. If you got a chance to see the movie in an Atmos-enabled cinema during its theatrical run, you will know why this is such a big deal. However, we like it because hands-down, this is the best movie to get a Dolby Atmos-enabled Blu-ray to date -- and we'd like to see that trend continue.

Dolby Atmos can deliver sound from just about every direction, including overhead. Not to long ago, it was a format that was limited to a few select theaters. Since its debut, Dolby has been giving the audio format to a variety of different films theatrically. However, the home theater crowd has yet to experience a really good movie with this really good audio format. (See our "Hey, Studios, How About Some Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Discs that Don't Suck?" for a list of the other Atmos-enabled releases to date.)

Other than the audio, very little is known about the release. We do know that this round will only be available in 2D. The lack of 3D version is a bit of a bummer, given our own Greg Robinson's raves about the previous Blu-ray's 3D effects. (And the fact that he never raves about 3D!). Otherwise, another one of the new bonus features will be a "Silent Space Version" of the film, which allows viewers to snip out the score "for a surprising cinematic experiment."

It's an interesting experiment, to say the least. After all, Steve Price took home the Best Original Score Oscar for that score. Still, we have to imagine that with that gone, Sandra Bullock won't be the only one watching and gasping for air.

The Gravity Diamond Luxe Blu-ray will ship on February 10, 2015. However, Amazon currently has it available for the pre-order. It's priced at $24.98 (MSRP).
