Vivitek H1086-3D 1080p 3D Projector Does 2.35:1 for Under $2,000

By Chris Boylan

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the only way to go with 3D at home is to go BIG.  But until recently the price tag on full HD 1080p projectors with 3D capabilities has been too steep.  Vivitek aims to change that with the H1086-3D 1080p DLP projector.  Not only does this projector support all of the current 3D sources (e.g., top/bottom, side by side and Blu-ray 3D), but it also has a 2.35:1 aspect ratio mode for direct support of ultrawide CinemaScope movies in both 2D and 3D modes.

Except for Panasonic's PT-AE4000U and upcoming PT-AE7000U projectors, we have seen very few projectors that support 2.35:1 content without an expensive outboard processor and anamorphic lens.  The Vivitek H1086-3D projector does it without these add-ons by offering a digital zoom option that fills the screen with the 2.35:1 image without any geometric distortion.  This maintains the native resolution of the source, but eliminates the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.  Of course, a 2.35:1 screen is also required in order to take advantage of this feature.

Vivitek's H1086-3D will do 3D and 2.35:1 for under $2000.

The H1086-3D is one of Vivitek's first projector's to offer 3D compatibility without an external conversion box.  The projector includes a 2D-3D mode that will convert standard 2D content to 3D, thought our experience with this on several other products from various manufacturers has been that it doesn't really capture the same kind of depth and realism as a native 3D image.  3D viewing is enabled with any DLP-Link-compatible active shutter 3D glasses.

The projector's brightness rating is stated as 2000 Lumens and the rated contrast is 5,000:1.  The H1086-3D is expected to begin shipping this fall for a suggested list price (MSRP) of somewhere between $1499 and $1999 (note: pricing was updated on 9/8/11 at Vivitek's request, based on new information).
