Vidity-Compatible Hard Drives Provide Local Alternative to 4K Ultra HD Streaming

By Rachel Cericola

If you've been waiting and wondering how you're going to build that 4K movie collection, we may have an answer. Or at least, theĀ Secure Content Storage Association (SCSA) may have an answer; the organization just released licensing specifications for Vidity.

Vidity is a technology that allows for "the secure delivery of premium digital entertainment experiences, including unparalleled and locally stored playback of 4K Ultra HD and HD movies across multiple devices." No logins or web connections are needed. Any Vidity-compliant product can store, copy, play and share downloaded digital files to all sorts of other devices, including laptops, smartphones and tablets.

Once the digital content is on one of those Vidity-enabled devices, you can play it back on the screen of another enabled device. Users can even move and copy content.

Of course, the big hook is that Viditiy has support for 4K Ultra HD and high dynamic range (HDR), in order to deliver the best entertainment experience possible. According to the SCSA, Vidity is designed to complement streaming platforms, such as UltraViolet.

Vidity specs were created to benefit studio, technology and security companies in the home entertainment ecosystem. Of course, the SCSA also wants consumers to enjoy the content -- maybe even on products developed by members of the SCSA.

Samsung, Fox, Seagate, Western Digital and MGO all currently have Vidity-compatible products currently available. Western Digital is actually one of the founding members of the SCSA, so it would make sense that they have one of the first Vidity-enabled products. The My Passport Cinema 4K UHD player is a 1TB drive, which is compatible with Vidity-enabled 4K UHD TVs or devices with a USB port. According to the HD Guru, fellow founding member Samsung is helping to promote the product by offering a preloaded player with 4K UHD movies from 20th Century Fox for the purchase of the select 4K UHD TV models.

"The Vidity solution represents the collaboration of over 50 key industry leaders across the content, technology, device and security industries," says David Huerta, general manager and executive director of SCSA. "Our founders and contributors are aligned in the goal of bringing the consumer the highest quality digital entertainment experience possible through the implementation of the Vidity specifications. We all look forward to Vidity-compliant products establishing a durable and future-proof marketplace for consumers later this year."

Western Digital is selling the My Passport Cinema 4K UHD player now, priced at $89.99.
