VIZIO Unveils New Reference Series 4K Ultra HD TV with Dolby Vision HDR, Extended Color

By Rachel Cericola

Today in New York City, VIZIO is unveiling a slew of new products for 2015. However, all eyes (and sweaty hands) will surely be on the upcoming Reference Series Ultra HD Full-Array LED Smart TVs.

All of that attention will be well deserved, too. After all, these aren't just new 4K TVs, but they will be the first High Dynamic Range 4K TVs to support Dolby Vision.

Available in 65- and 120-inch screen sizes, the VIZIO Reference Series uses Ultra-Color Spectrum, which promises colors closer to the range a human eye can see, with over 8 million pixels in every image. It also has an 800-nit, full-array backlight for a wider and more dynamic range of luminance, as well as 384 active LED zones for better contrast control.

It's important to note that the aforementioned Ultra-Color Spectrum perk allows the VIZIO Reference Series to support Dolby Vision. This High Dynamic Range (HDR) option promises better colors, contrast and overall brightness. As we mentioned earlier, it also allows this model to be the first to deliver 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision titles from Warner Bros. to the masses, all through VUDU streaming.

Other features include Clear Action 1800 and a 240Hz effective refresh rate for smooth on-screen sports and other action-packed moments, the new VM50 Ultra HD processing engine, a Spatial Scaling Engine, built-in WiFi, and VIZIO Internet Apps Plus. Besides the VUDU service, VIZIO Internet Apps Plus can deliver access to Ultra HD content from Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, UltraFlix, Toon Goggles and more. With the VIZIO V6 six-core processor and support for the HEVC H.265 codec, users should be able to navigate through those apps quickly and with ease.

In case you can't decide between the two screen sizes, know that the 65-incher has an integrated 5.1 sound system that boasts support for Dolby and DTS audio formats, as well as a sound pressure level up to 101dB. The system consists of a soundbar that's actually built into the base of the TV, along with a 10-inch wireless subwoofer and two rear satellite speakers.

"The Reference Series redefines 'best-in-class' picture quality and audio standards," said Matt McRae, VIZIO's chief technology officer. "We leveraged our deep understanding of the consumer experience to fuel innovative technologies that take critical drivers of picture quality -- like color and contrast -- to new levels, transforming long-existing standards. Packed with breakthrough achievements like High Dynamic Range and Ultra-Color Spectrum for a wider-than-ever color gamut, the Reference Series shatters the limits of what's possible for cinephiles. The addition of an unbelievably powerful integrated 5.1 audio solution with a 10-inch wireless subwoofer and two rear satellite speakers further reinforces that the VIZIO Reference Series delivers the most immaculate home theater experience possible."

Currently, there's no word on when VIZIO will be shipping the Reference Series Ultra HD TV Series -- and for how much. The company says that you can sign up to receive email updates on the VIZIO website.
