The Twilight Zone Season 4 Coming to Blu-ray May 17

By Chris Chiarella

Image Entertainment has set May 17th as the street date for the upcoming release of Season 4 of Rod Serling's classic TV series, The Twilight Zone on Blu-ray. Frequent Big Picture Big Sound readers will know of our great enthusiasm for these high-def reissues, primarily for two reasons. Technically, they have been exceptional thus far, with outstanding video remastered from the original 35mm film elements, paired with restored, uncompressed mono audio. And despite the age of the program, Image manages to keep surprising us with new-to-home-video extras.

Season 4 was significant in that, for a single broadcast year, the half-hour format was bumped up to a full hour, allowing Serling & Co. to tell more complex and involved stories. The stars attracted for this season included future Oscar winners Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper, box office idol Burt Reynolds, along with enduring icons such as Burgess Meredith, Anne Francis, James Whitmore, Bill Bixby and Julie Newmar.

Newly added extras for this set include 13 fresh audio commentaries from a host of experts and celebrity authors, plus an archival audio interview with director of photography George T. Clemens. Ported over from the "Definitive Collection" DVDs are additional audio and on-camera talent interviews, radio dramatizations of seven Season 4 episodes, isolated scores for all 18 episodes, rare Rod Serling footage and even a spoof clip from Saturday Night Live.
