Supernatural: The Complete Seventh Season Blu-ray Review

By Rachel Cericola

The Film

Apparently, the world is filled with an awful lot of demons. The Winchester brothers (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) are about to kick off their eighth (!) season of kicking evil ass on The CW's Supernatural. The new season doesn't start until October 3, so you should have plenty of time to get through Supernatural: The Complete Seventh Season.

After a few seasons, this one kicks off with Castiel (Misha Collins) declaring himself a god. However, he may not be the god. Whoever and whatever he is, he's got some crazy powers and seems pretty vengeful. As he punishes the evildoers among us, he unleashes the Leviathans -- who do away with Castiel and start swapping bodies, but not in a Freaky Friday way.

It appears that Richard "Dick" Roman (a perfect James Patrick Stuart) is looking to turn humanity into a delicious food supply for the Leviathans, so Sam and Dean need to deal with those nasties, the Word of God, angels, the Devil, and the evils of corn syrup.

Supernatural has always been a fun little show and Supernatural: The Complete Seventh Season is no exception. It's not the show's best season to date, but it's one worth watching. After all, how can you not love a show where turducken is used as a weapon?

The Picture

The Complete Seventh Season is the complete package, as far as the image is concerned. It should be no surprise that a show like this has a dark palette overall. However, there's plenty of brighter imagery and great colors throughout. There is a little crush that's worth mentioning, but it shouldn't ruin your fun. Detail is especially nice in close-ups, whether it's on the lead characters or one of the many monsters sprinkled throughout the season.

The Sound

Despite the show's two good-looking leads, Supernatural is a show that depends on special effects for entertainment. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track included here is a fun little ride, with excellent dialogue and plenty of directional effects. Oh, and classic rock. Sweet! Overall, the audio track takes every opportunity to engulf the viewer in the action, whether it's through the Leviathan attacks, feeding frenzies, gunshots, or death by cheese.

The Extras

Each of this set's four discs has a few extras -- with an emphasis on few. Only three of the season's 23 episodes have commentary, which is paired with one outtake, a gag reel and some other slim selections. The best of the bunch is "Supernatural Creature Fest Drive-In," which is a serious of fun little production featurettes.

Final Thoughts

It's hard to expect too much from a show in its seventh season. That said, if you're this far into your collection, you're not going to want to skip over this one. Supernatural: The Complete Seventh Season offers up a lot of goofy, scary fun. It's also got a nice enough AV presentation to make this one worth picking up.
