Big Picture Big Sound

SpeakerCraft's BoomTomb Outdoor Subwoofer Rocks from Underground

By Rachel Cericola

SpeakerCraft is extremely familiar with how to put sound into your walls and into your rooms. However, they seemed to be looking for a new challenge when creating the BoomTomb.

Designed to complement the company's Outdoor Elements, Ruckus and OG series speakers, this newly announced subwoofer goes deep underground to deliver bass for your outdoor audio setup. The company says that a small, hooded port will stick out above the ground's surface (see picture below). This should keep the unit safe from debris, weather and (hopefully) woodland creatures.

The BoomTomb has a 10-inch long throw woofer inside a poly/resin enclosure. That woofer is powered by a dedicated 250-watt amplifier. It sounds like it could make the Earth move -- literally.

"Outdoor audio continues to be a huge category for us" commented Dave Donald, SpeakerCraft's V.P. of marketing. "Adding critical low end reinforcement to our already broad assortment of exterior loudspeakers is a natural progression and a benefit to dealers who are always looking for ways to improve sound quality outdoors."

You may want to get those portable heaters fired up; the BoomTomb should start shipping in Q4 2010. Pricing has yet to be announced.
