Sony Starts 3 New Lines of 4K Ultra HD TVs Under $1K

By Rachel Cericola

Before you take off for the summer, know that you can spend your vacation sitting in air conditioning and enjoying a new 4K Ultra HD TV. Sony Electronics just announced plans to release three new lines of 4K TVs -- and all of them are a lot more affordable than what we've seen from the company in the past.

The XBR-X800D, the XBR-X750D, and the XBR-X700D are now available for pre-order, with prices starting under $1,000. All three models will then start shipping in July.

Promising over eight million pixels, all of these options boast incredible detail and the type of picture quality you'd expect from 4K. Each one can also upconvert HD sources for a near-4K experience.

All three models come packing Google's Android TV operating system, so you can stream video, as well as download entertainment or use the TV as a gaming device. This means that each TV can access a slew of web-based services, including Amazon Video, YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, PBS. and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's ULTRA streaming service. There's also a ton of games and other apps available for TV use through the Google Play Store.

Also worth mentioning is that the Android TV platform allows you to use your TV as a smart home interface when combined with the Logitech Harmony Hub. For instance, you can use the Android TV's on-screen interface or the Voice Search feature to control lights, shades, thermostats, and more. More than 270,000 home entertainment products and IoT (internet of things) devices are compatible.

If you think these TVs are missing anything, you can use the built-in Google Cast feature to "cast" your favorite apps to the TV from any Android or iOS device, Mac or Windows computer, or Chromebook.

The XBR-X800D series includes the 43-inch XBR-49X800D ($1,299.99) and the 49-inch XBR-43X800D ($1,499.99). These models come with High Dynamic Range (HDR) support. The TVs in the XBR-X750D and XBR-X700D lines don't have HDR out of the box, but will be elligible for a firmware update later this year. The XBR-X750D has one 65-inch 4K TV, priced at $2,299.99. The XBR-X700D lineup is also available for pre-order now, with the 49-inch XBR-49X700D ($999.99) and the 55-inch XBR-55X700D ($1,499.99).
