Sony Pushes a Pair of Google TV Products, Starts Pre-orders

By Rachel Cericola

Two TV manufacturers are hard at work, still trying to get the masses excited about Google TV. LG recently announced its G2 Series, a pair of 3D-capable LED HDTVs with the web giant's technology built right in. Now, Sony is starting to take pre-orders on one of its two new Google TV products.

Starting July 22, the company will start shipping the NSZ-GS7 Internet Player with Google TV to retailers in the U.S. This will also be the first Google TV product to be offered to international audiences, launching first in the UK, followed by Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Brazil, and Mexico.

Sometime before the holiday season, Sony is also planning to release the NSZ-GP9 Internet Blu-ray Disc Player. This device will combine the functionality of a Blu-ray player with the Google TV platform.

Both units promise to put the best of Google on your big big screen, including the Google Chrome web browser and thousands of app options via the Google Play Store.

Each one also comes with a new remote with a backlit QWERTY keyboard, a touchpad and a three-axis motion sensor for gaming. The Bluetooth remote can also be used for other devices, such as the TV, a set-top box and an AV receiver. The NSZ-GP9 also adds in voice search features.

"Expanding the reach and interoperability of the powerful Android platform with Sony's smartphones, tablets and renowned audio and video products, we are proud to continue our relationship with Google through the introduction of the new Google TV set-top-box," said Phil Molyneux, president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics. "Entertainment content is available through so many channels and sites, and Google TV helps consumers easily find what they want to watch, listen to or play using familiar search engine technology, enhancing the viewer experience. TV will never be the same."

Sony is currently taking pre-orders for the NSZ-GS7 Internet Player with Google TV. The company has listed the box with an MSRP of $199. The NSZ-GP9 Internet Blu-ray Disc Player will follow later this year, with an MSRP of $299.
