Sony FMP-X10 4K Ultra HD TV Media Player Coming in July for $699, $499 if You Order Now

By Rachel Cericola

In just a few weeks, Sony will start shipping all sorts of TVs from its 2014 4K Ultra HD TV lineup. Now they're starting to think about what kind of equipment you can pair with it.

The company just announced the availability and pricing information for the Sony 4K Ultra HD Media Player. Also known as the FMP-X10, the player will start shipping in July, with an MSRP of $699. However, Sony says that if you order between now and July 15, 2014, you'll save $200. That will bring the price down to $499.

Not to be confused with last year's FMP-X1 streamer, the FMP-X10 allows users to download, stream and store 4K content on the box's 1TB hard drive. It also has support for Sony's TRILUMINOS Color technology and access to streaming 4K services.

One of those streaming options is Sony's own Video Unlimited 4K service. Promising over 200 titles, Video Unlimited 4K has options that you'll actually want to watch, such as the acclaimed film American Hustle and the hit TV series The Blacklist. The company also plans to add other options in the future, including the blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the upcoming Annie remake, when available. Besides being able to rent and buy titles, Video Unlimited 4K also has over 50 titles are available for streaming at no charge.

Sony is also making 4K content from Netflix available on the box, so you can stream House of Cards or Breaking Bad (which is coming in June), all in 4K. Also worth noting is that the FMP-X10 is an exclusive for those with a Sony 4K TV or projector. (That means that it won't work with any other TV manufacturer!)

Sony's 4K Ultra HD Media Player (FMP-X10) is now available for pre-order.
