Small Speakers, Big Sound? Bryston Unveils the Mini A 3-Way Bookshelf Speaker

By Rachel Cericola

Remember when the size of your speakers would dictate the type of power and performance they could deliver? Companies like Bryston are making those days a distant memory. In fact, Bryston is packing big sound into its smallest speaker yet, the Mini A Loudspeaker.

The Mini A is a new three-way bookshelf speaker, which measures just over 15-inches tall. Despite the small cabinet, the Mini A has 3/4-inch MDF, a 6.5-inch aluminum woofer, a 3-inch aluminum midrange, and a 1-inch titanium dome tweeter.

Don't let the size of these fool you, though. Bryston says that each one can be cranked up to high levels, without adding distortion or compression into the listening experience.

The Mini A has a frequency response of 60Hz to 20Khz (+/- 3dB), 8 ohms nominal impedance, and a sensitivity rating of 87dB. Other features include premium-grade binding posts along with padded feet, spikes and a black fabric grille.

"The Mini was engineered from the ground up to set a performance standard for a speaker in this size and price range," says Bryston's James Tanner. "Throughout our loudspeaker lineup, we employ three different midrange drivers and five different versions of our woofer -- we are actually building drivers specifically to address design goals for each model. The Mini A's exceptional performance can be attributed to the refined product development process and quality components utilized in this loudspeaker."

Designed specifically for home theater use, Bryston says that two pairs of Mini A speakers would go nicely with the AC-1 Micro center channel and the Model A subwoofer. That 5.1 loudspeaker package can be had for under $5,000. If you're looking to purchase the Mini A on its own, it's available in Natural Cherry, Boston Cherry and Black Ash, priced at $1,200 per pair. Custom finishes can be ordered for an upcharge and stands are also an option for $299 per pair.
