Sharp Promises 'Beyond 4K' with 2015 AQUOS 4K Ultra HD TV Lineup

By Rachel Cericola

With so many 4K Ultra HD TVs coming out of CES 2015, Sharp Electronics knew they needed to go above and beyond. So when the company announced its 2015 AQUOS 4K Ultra HD TV lineup, Sharp included the AQUOS Beyond 4K Ultra HD TV, which promises to be "the highest resolution TV available in 2015."

Is that even possible? Yes, according to Sharp, whose Beyond 4K Ultra HD TV features proprietary pixel splitting and Quattron technologies. All of that technology translates into 66 million subpixels. That's about 42 million more than your typical 4K Ultra HD, promising 167 percent greater resolution. That's almost 8K, people!

Available as an 80-incher, the Beyond 4K Ultra HD TV also has the next-gen Revelation Upscaler, the SPECTROS Rich Color Display, High Dynamic Range technology and a full array LED with local dimming.

While pricing has yet to be announced, the Sharp AQUOS Beyond 4K Ultra HD TV is scheduled to start shipping in late 2015.

In addition to the Beyond 4K Ultra HD TV, Sharp debuted the rest of the 2015 AQUOS 4K Ultra HD TV lineup earlier today at a press conference in Las Vegas. This year's offering will quadruple the number of 4K UHD TVs offered across seven screen sizes, ranging from 43 to 80 inches.

If you're eyeballs aren't quite ready to handle "Beyond 4K," Sharp will also have three other AQUOS 4K TV lines this year: the UB30, the UE30 and the UH30. Each one will feature a quad-core processor, H.265 and VP9, an all-new codec for playing 4K content in its native form.

The UB30 Series is the lineup's entry-level offering, with the 43-inch LC43UB30U ($749.99), the 50-inch LC50UB30U ($999.99), the 55-inch LC55UB30U ($1,199.99) and the 65-inch LC65UB30U ($2,299.99). These sets feature the Revelation Upscaler, built-in WiFi, 4K streaming, and the SmartCentral 3.0 Smart TV platform. The two smaller models have three HDMI inputs and two USB ports, with the two larger sets adding in an extra HDMI input. Also worth mentioning is that the 65-incher adds in local dimming.

Right in the middle of the 2015 lineup is the UE30 Series, with the 60-inch LC60UE30 ($1,999.99), the 70-inch LC70UE30 ($2,799.99) and the 80-inch LC80UE30 ($5,399.99). Besides the above features, this model will get the Android TV platform, which brings all of the movies, apps and games from Google Play right to the TV. It even includes voice search and the option to "cast" content from a compatible portable to the big screen. Other perks include AquoMotion 480, AquoDimming, four HDMI inputs and three USB ports. These sets will also come packing SmartCentral 4.0, which allows users to search across cable, satellite and streaming services from a single screen. It can even create personalized accounts for each member of the household. The 70- and 80-inch models also offer dual-stand placement options.

The UH30 is Sharp's flagship, with 4K THX certification for the line's 70-inch LC70UH30 ($3,199.99) and the 80-inch LC80UH30 ($5,999.99). That basically means that these models went through more than 400 picture quality tests to make sure each one could deliver content as it was originally intended. Other features include the SPECTROS Rich Color Display, the Android TV platform, SmartCentral 4.0, AquoMotion 960, AquoDimming, four HDMI inputs, three USB ports, and more. Both of the sets also come with a touchpad remote for easy access to all of the new features.

Expect all of Sharp's 2015 4K Ultra HD TVs to start shipping sometime in the spring.
